Reading Information Night Jefferson Elementary School September 20, 2016

Our Mission Jefferson Jaguars do whatever it takes to achieve high levels of learning for everyone.

Reading at School Whole Group Lessons Teachers and students read together to model reading strategies, introduce new genres, expand vocabulary, and model thinking skills. This stretches kids to try higher reading levels, and supports them in trying the new skills when they read in small groups and independently.

Grades 3-5: C.I.A. Approach Teachers model using longer texts to: Demonstrate how the act of reading should change over the course of a text Help students build stamina Model the quadrant approach to chapter books

Parent Bookmark C.I.A. Approach for Chapter Books Used with Grades 3-5

Reading at School Small Group Lessons New skills and strategies are modeled at the student’s level Re-teaching or enrichment Kids get immediate feedback Kids get guided practice Intensive adult-student interaction

Reading at School Independent Reading Students choose books at their independent level for fun, fast, and easy practice Teachers meet 1:1 with students to check their growth and push them to the next level Students share what they’re learning through “accountable talk”

Ideas for Reading at Home

What should I do while my child is reading at home? http://www.cultofpedagogy.com/reading-homework-tips-for-parents/

What if my kid doesn’t want to read? Read side-by-side with them Hunt for books about a topic that interests them Read a book based on favorite TV show or movie Read in a new place Read things other than books: grocery lists, signs, brochures, a letter you wrote, a blog, a magazine… Try reading at a different time in the day Read with a tool: flashlight, spoon, etc. Talk with your child’s teacher to get more ideas

Volunteers Needed! What: School Carnival When: Saturday, Sept. 24 Sign up in the hallway!
