VHS Chemistry 2017-2018 Unit 6: Reactions Week 2

Monday, February 12th Learning Target I will continue balancing equations Warm Up Write the following equation: Sulfur trioxide gas combines with liquid water to produce a solution of sulfuric acid SO3 (g) + H2O (l) → H2SO4 (aq)

Balancing Practice

Group Practice 1 Na2SO4(aq)+ CaCl2(aq)  CaSO4(s) + NaCl(aq)

Group Practice 2 Cu(s) + AgNO3(aq)  Cu(NO3)2(aq) + Ag(s)

Group Practice 3 Ca(s) + H2O(l)  Ca(OH)2 (aq) + H2(g)

Mixed Review Each table has an equation to write. When your group is done writing your equation you will rotate tables and convert their equation into the opposite format (from words to equations or from equations to words)

Tuesday & Wednesday February 13th & 14th Learning Target I will be able to Identify and Classify Reactions Warm Up Balance the following reaction: Cu(s) + AgNO3(aq)  Cu(NO3)2 + Ag(s)

Today Complete the POGIL Classifying Reactions activity. Check your independent practice #1 Add to your notes about how to recognize and classify the following types of reactions: Synthesis Decomposition Single Replacement Double Replacement Combustion

Classification of Reactions POGIL Take your time and work together as a group.

Types of Reactions

Reminders Independent Practice and Notes due today. Quiz tomorrow!

Translating Reactions Thursday February 15th Learning Target Quiz! Check our knowledge Translating Reactions Warm Up Review before the quiz

Balancing Practice #7 __C3H6 (g) + __O2 (g)  _H2O (g) + __CO2 (g)

Plan for Today Take the quiz Start setting up penny lab: Label your beaker with your class period and table group number. Write down what year of penny each group member has File and weigh your penny Put your beaker in the fume hood

Quiz Clear your table of everything except your periodic table. After you are done with the quiz pick up the Independent Practice #2 and the penny lab Independent Practice #2 should be completed by March 7th Quiz #2 is March 8th

Friday February 16th Learning Target I will begin to investigate single replacement reactions Warm Up

Penny Lab

Finish Penny Lab You will need a paper towel out on your table to let your pennies dry Pick up your beaker from me at the front desk, bring two paper towels so you do not touch the beaker directly Use tweezers to take the penny out of the solution and to wash it off in the sink After you are done with the analysis questions we will discuss our results
