Weight gain in dogs is defined to be terrifying than their weight loss.

Generally, weight gain is considered in dogs when their calorie intake exceeds their metabolic demands.

Their calorie intake exceeds 15 percent of their ideal body weight according to the standard dog weight chart.

So, as a dog owner, a sudden weight gain in your dog is something that you always need to take seriously.

Apart from the excess food, there are also several medical causes are responsible for weight gain in dogs. Let's have a look.

Excess Appetite

Excess eating of foods can result in weight gain in dogs, but there are a few medical conditions that are associated with the dog's excess appetite.

Weight gain in dogs due to excess eating may be the reason for boredom, overeating, and other physical issues.

The increased appetite in dog's may be the reason of endocrine disorders and the high dosage of anti-seizure drugs.

Reduce Appetite

If your dog gains more weight by eating normally or by eating less as compared to their normal diet, then your dog has a slow metabolism.

Many dogs genetically predisposes to gain extra weight, that later on lead to the obesity problem.

Age is also an important factor that can undergo to reduce the appetite of your dog but gain more weight.

Reduced appetite rate in your dog is also caused by the medical condition known as hypothyroidism.

Thyroid Problem

Like human, thyroid gland in the dog produce hormones to control the metabolism.

When too little hormone produced in a dog's body called as hypothyroidism then it can lead to weight gain in dogs.

In thyroid problem you notice energy level decrease in dogs and rapid weight gain without any change in the diet.

It is most often seen in dogs of middle-aged to older dogs from the medium to large sized breeds.

Cushing's Disease

Cushing is a hormonal related problem that mostly affects the dog's of middle-aged to older but also affects any dog.

This disease will cause weight gain in dogs due to too much secretion of glucocorticoids and steroid hormones called cortisol.

The Cushing hormones affect the Fido's metabolism in your dog's body and too much seen in senior dogs.

Other symptoms of this disease are an increase in eating, drinking, urination, hair loss as well as thin skin.

Other Weight Gain Problems

The older dogs suffer from creaky joints and the loss of muscle tone and strength.

Extra weight can cause many health problems even in younger and fitter dogs.

Sudden weight gain in dogs may indicate much serious internal illness due to the lack of the right nutrition.

If you notice any type of sudden weight gain in your dog, then consult with your veterinarian immediately.
