James Monroe was the 5th President during the Era of Good Feelings, a time of peace and nationalism.

Convention of 1818- Agreement between U. S. and Britain Convention of 1818- Agreement between U.S. and Britain. It set the boundary of the U.S. and Canada at the 49th parallel.

Monroe Doctrine- Stated that foreign powers should not create new colonies in North and South America. The people there are to be left alone. The U.S. would see this action as hostile if a European power moves into the Western Hemisphere.

Sequoya-Cherokee Indian who developed a writing system for his tribe Sequoya-Cherokee Indian who developed a writing system for his tribe. He did not want the Cherokees removed from their homeland.

The Cumberland Road was the first road built by the federal government The Cumberland Road was the first road built by the federal government. It ran from Cumberland Maryland to Wheeling, West Virginia. It was built with Tax money.

Flag of Spain- In the Adams-Onis treaty, Spain gave up Florida to the U.S. and the U.S. gave up it’s claims to what is now Texas.

Seminole War in Florida- Andrew Jackson invaded Florida to capture Seminole raiders. His presence there prompted Spain to give up Florida in the Adams-Onis Treaty.

Simon Bolivar- knows as the Liberator Simon Bolivar- knows as the Liberator. He helped countries such as Columbia, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador win their independence from Spain. He is the George Washington of South America.

State of Georgia- wanted all Indians removed from their state State of Georgia- wanted all Indians removed from their state. Worcester vs Georgia was a court case that the Cherokees won to stay on their land. The Indians won the case but the people of Georgia still forced them out.

Trail of Tears- the forced removal of Indians from East of the Mississippi to Indian Territory, which is now called Oklahoma. Thousands of Indians died on this journey.

The Erie Canal- Government built canal from Buffalo to Albany, New York. This connected the two cities . It was part of Henry Clay’s American system to connect the country.

Washington Irving writes best selling book called the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Based on a revolutionary war legend in New England.

Missouri Compromise- Made Maine a free state and Missouri a slave state. It also created a line at the 36 30 parallel. Everything north of line would be free and everything south of line would be slave.

Flag of Great Britain- The U. S Flag of Great Britain- The U.S. and the British agreed to limit naval power on the Great Lakes. This was called the Rush-Bagot Agreement. The U.S. and British will never fight against each other again.

Henry Clay- known as the Great Peacemaker Henry Clay- known as the Great Peacemaker. He came up with the Missouri Compromise on separating slave and free states. He also came up with the American System in which he wanted to connect America with roads. He was a Representative from Kentucky.

Last of the Mohicans- best selling book written by James Fenimore Cooper about the last of an Indian tribe and the War of 1812.

John Quincy Adams- President #6 John Quincy Adams- President #6. He narrowly defeated Andrew Jackson for the presidency. Jackson accused him of being part of a “corrupt bargain” where he became president and made Henry Clay the Secretary of State.

Panic of 1837- Economic depression under President Martin Van Buren Panic of 1837- Economic depression under President Martin Van Buren. Financial Crisis. Unemployment was high and he cost of goods were high. Van Buren was a unpopular president.

Nationalism- proud of your country Nationalism- proud of your country. These people are celebrating the 4th of July.

Pioneers used wagons to move west Pioneers used wagons to move west. The used the National Road which stretched all the way to Illinois.

Nominating Convention- public meetings where party’s pick their presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

Andrew Jackson- was beat by John Quincy Adams in 1824 presidential election. He thought it was a “corrupt bargain”. He was a popular general in War of 1812 and he was moved Indians out making it safe for Americans. Very popular, became president in 1828, defeating Adams who tried to get re-elected.

John Calhoun- Senator from South Carolina, Andrew Jackson’s vice-president. He hated the Tariff of Abominations and was the first vice-president to quit.

Tariff of Abominations- a tax put on foreign goods Tariff of Abominations- a tax put on foreign goods. It forced southern states to buy more expensive products from northern states. The Southern states hated this tax. Wasn’t fair…John Calhoun especially hated it.

Nullification Crisis- Calhoun and South Carolina thought the Tariff of Abominations was horrible. They said they would not follow this law. South Carolina threatened to leave the United States. President Andrew Jackson would force South Carolina to follow the law!!

McCulloch vs Maryland- Maryland passed taxes on the National Bank McCulloch vs Maryland- Maryland passed taxes on the National Bank. The National bank did not pay them and the Supreme Court said they don’t have to pay. The national bank won the case.

Whig Party- political party that thought the legislature must be a very strong branch and the president did not have to have much power. Martin Van Buren and William Henry Harrison were whigs.

William Henry Harrison-Whig president, nicknamed Tippecanoe because he was the hero of the Indian battle at Tippecanoe, Indiana. Died after being president for 30 days.

The Indian Removal Act forced all Indians east of the Mississippi River to Indian Territory, which is now Oklahoma. The Seminole, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Cherokee where the big tribes removed .

Osceola- Seminole Indian chief who would not give up Osceola- Seminole Indian chief who would not give up. He hid in the everglades of Florida. Osceola was captured and jailed but many Seminoles still live in Florida today.
