Bringing Education Home: Building Partnerships to Improve Educational Outcomes January 2018 Institute for Children, Poverty and Homelessness Beyond Housing: A National Conversation on Child Homelessness and Poverty

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Participants will… Objective 1: be able to identify cross- sector initiatives that address poverty; Objective 2: gain a sense for how cross- sector partnerships function; Objective 3: develop greater understanding for how cross-sector partnerships impact policy, funding, and practices; and Objective 4: explore ways in which you can initiate and strengthen partnerships in your community.

VANCOUVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS Achievement highlights since 2010 21 point increase in early kindergarten literacy 20 point decrease in 3rd-grade English language learner literacy gap 30% decrease in middle school D and F rates 120% increase in middle school honors course enrollment 200% increase in students of poverty enrolled in AP/IB courses 51% of recent HS graduates enrolled in dual credit courses 16 point increase of on-time graduation rate to over 80%; extended year rate is over 85% Our students 40% students of color 24% from homes where a language other than English is spoken 13% English language learners 50% eligible for subsidized meals 13% receive special education services
