The Services Sector   81.9% North East workforce currently employed in services sector, including: Retail Accommodation and food service Information and communication Financial activities Professional, scientific and technical activities Education Administrative and support services Arts, entertainment and recreation Boosted by County Durham’s Heritage Corridor, including: Durham Cathedral Bowes Museum Beamish Open Air Museum Figures from the Office of National Statistics – show that almost 82% of all employed people in County Durham worked in the services sector to December 2016 https://www.ons.gov.uk/employmentandlabourmarket/peopleinwork/employmentandemployeetypes/bulletins/regionallabourmarket/apr2017#summary-of-latest-regional-labour-market-statistics This includes roles in Retail Accommodation and food service Information and communication Financial activities Professional, scientific and technical activities Education Administrative and support services Arts, entertainment and recreation These figures are among the highest outside London and the South East and are likely boosted by County Durham’s Heritage Corridor This includes attractions such as Durham Cathedral, Bowes Museum, Beamish Open Air Museum and many more, which combine to create an exciting heritage and cultural tourism offer in the region

Auckland Castle Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland Home to the Prince Bishops of Durham for 900 years Now being transformed into a world class arts, faith and heritage destination Helping to attract more than 430,000 visitors to the town every year by 2020 Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland is at the heart of that Heritage Corridor Once a private palace for the Prince Bishops of Durham, it is now being transformed into a world class arts, faith and heritage destination by the Auckland Castle Trust Combined with other projects, this could attract more than 430,000 visitors per year to Bishop Auckland by 2020

The Future Plans  Auckland Castle Trust is the charity that owns Auckland Castle It is investing £70m to restore Auckland Castle and create new attractions, including: - Mining Art Gallery - Faith Museum - Spanish Gallery - Welcome Building - Walled Garden with contemporary restaurant Opening in stages over the next 3 years Requiring a wide range of skills Auckland Castle Trust is the charity that owns Auckland Castle It is investing £70m to restore the Castle to its Georgian Gothic opulence and create new attractions to help draw in those 430,000 visitors. This includes: A Mining Art Gallery Faith Museum Spanish Gallery Landmark Welcome Building Walled Garden with contemporary restaurant These projects will open in stages over the next three years Beginning with the Mining Art Gallery in Autumn 2017 The Castle, Walled Garden and Welcome Building in 2018 The Faith Museum and Spanish Gallery in 2019 Each will require a wide range of skills to be a success, including Building and construction Curatorial Facilities management and maintenance Visitor services Events organisation Marketing and communications Administrative support Finance and accountancy Education and engagement

Get Involved 8,000 opportunities for employment, skills development and training This includes: - Employment - Apprenticeships - Work placements - Volunteering - Heritage Skills workshops We are also working with schools, youth groups and other organisations to help develop confidence and skills As part of these plans Auckland Castle Trust expects to create almost 8,000 opportunities for employment, skills development and training This includes Employment opportunities Apprenticeships Volunteering roles Work placements And Heritage Skills workshops where you can try your hand at traditional crafts, including weaving, blacksmithing and more Auckland Castle Trust is also working work closely with schools, youth groups and other organisations on a wide range of schemes, including The Stepping Stones Project – helping long term employed develop new skills and increased confidence And Confidence in Me – helping young people prepare for employment or further education

Eleven Arches Sister charity to Auckland Castle Trust Responsible for Kynren – An Epic Tale of England More than 1,200 volunteers, including Cast Stage crew Experience team To apply visit www.elevenarches.org Auckland Castle Trust’s sister charity, Eleven Arches, is also creating opportunities in Bishop Auckland Already, the charity has invested £35m to create open air spectacular Kynren-An Epic Tale of England The show, premiered in 2016, with a summer audience of 100,000 people This year there are even more performances and more than 1,2000 volunteers helping to bring the show to life Known as Archers, they cover everything from technical support and ticketing to visitor services and taking centre stage Though the on stage cast is already full this year, there are still opportunities remaining in: Experience team (meet and greet) Go team (stage management for Show or Cavalry teams). The Auckland Academy Partnership between Auckland Castle Trust and Bishop Auckland College Offering a wide range of apprenticeships with the charity and other employers 9 apprenticeships are already running at Auckland Castle 60 more will be created over the next 3 years In 2016, Auckland Castle Trust and Bishop Auckland College joined forces to launch the Auckland Academy It was designed to offer young people in Bishop Auckland an opportunity to develop their skills and gain hands on experience while staying in education To date, the Academy has co-orindated 9 apprenticeships with Auckland Castle Trust & countless more with employers across County Durham Of the 9 apprentices at ACT, one is now studying towards their professional financial qualifications, while the others have gone on to the next level of their apprenticeship with the charity A further 60 apprenticeships will be created with ACT over the next three years, including 34 funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund opportunities will include administration, customer service, horticulture, catering and hospitality.
