Why did World War One start? Revision of Long Term Causes

In the early 19th century Germany as a country did not exist In the early 19th century Germany as a country did not exist. Instead there were a number of small German states. 1. When did Germany unite into one country? 1850 1871 1926 2005

In 1870, Prussia, (one of the German states), won a war against France In 1870, Prussia, (one of the German states), won a war against France. 2. What land did Germany take from France as part of the war settlement? Rhineland Paris Alsace and Lorraine Birmingham

3. How did the losing of land make the French feel? Happy, as they did not like Alsatian dogs. Very annoyed. They wanted revenge. Very annoyed. These areas had been part of France for 200 years, and were rich in coal and iron ore, so were important for industry. They did not care, as they liked the Germans.

4. Which country was the most industrial in the middle of the 19th century? Great Britain France China Zambia

5. Which countries were becoming the most industrial by the beginning of the 20th century? Great Britain and France China and Japan Russia and Hungary Germany and the U.S.A.

6. After 1871 the German economy grew faster than that of Britain 6. After 1871 the German economy grew faster than that of Britain. As a result many people in Britain viewed Germany as: Great at playing football Producing the best goods in the world An economic rival A poor country full of peasants

Visit his grandmother, Queen Victoria, at her home on the Isle of Wight, and play war games in a toy fort, with his cousin, George. Stay at home and catch up with his schoolwork.

13. What was the name of the new battleship that Britain built? Enterprise Dreadnought Ark Royal Fred

14. What was the Naval Arms Race? Race between Britain and France to see who could get the most rifles on ships. Race between France and Russia to see who could control the most of the North Sea. Britain and German both spending huge amounts of money on ship building programmes to try to out do each other. Raft race between the Naval pub and the Royal Arms pub.

15. Where were the Balkans? Near Blackpool Part of France One of the German states In eastern Europe, south of Austria-Hungary and West of Russia.

16. Why was there tension in the Balkans? Some countries got independence from the Turkish Empire, but some countries which wanted independence were still ruled by Austria. Russia tried to take over the whole region. Serbia had doubled in size. There were many Serbs living under Austrian rule in Bosnia, and Austria-Hungary was determined that Serbia would not acquire Bosnia. Austria-Hungary wanted to take over both Serbia and Greece.
