Perpetual “And Father and Eddy would start once more while I watched, doomed to be positively un-American, a weakling, a perpetual spectator, an outsider.” POS – Adjective Prediction – Definition – 1. lasting forever or for a long time 2. continuing without interruption; constant

Rationalize “I rationalized the hunt by telling myself I was not murdering rabbits or deer, just a mean old rat—like a furry kind of cockroach.” POS –Verb Prediction – Definition –1. to be reasonable 2. to create seemingly true explanations for one’s actions and beliefs, usually in self-deception

Brusquely “At the back door of our apartment, he paused and said brusquely, ‘Now for some rules. First, never, never aim the rifle at anyone.’” POS –Adverb Prediction – Definition –to behave or speak in a rough way

Winced “He winced now as if the rat had just nipped him.” POS –Verb Prediction – Definition –to draw back slightly, usually with a grimace
