Example 1: Find the perimeter of the rectangle with the coordinates (-1,8), (2,8), (-1,2), (2,2). Graph the ordered pairs on the coordinate plane.
Add the sides. 6 units 6 + 6 + 3 + 3 = 18 units 3 units
Example 2: Find the area of the figure with the coordinates (-1,8), (2,8), (-1,2), (2,2). Graph the ordered pairs on the coordinate plane.
A = 6 x 3 = 18 units2 The figure is a rectangle so use the formula A = length x width. A = 6 x 3 = 18 units2
Example 3: Find the perimeter and area of the rectangle with coordinates (-4, -2), (-4, -6), (3, -2), (3, -6). You can find the distance between the points without graphing. Distance between (-4, -2) and (-4, -6) = 4 units Distance between (-4, -2) and (3, -2) = 7 units
Perimeter = 4 + 4 + 7 + 7 = 22 units Area = 4 x 7 = 28 units2
Practice Find the perimeter and area of the rectangles with the coordinates (-2, 4), (-3, 4), (-2, 6), (-3, 6). P = 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 6 units A = 1 x 2 = 2 units2
Closure P = 4 + 4 + 6 + 6 = 20 units A = 4 x 6 = 24 units2 Find the perimeter and area of the rectangle with coordinates of (-2,5), (4, 5), (-2, 1), (4, 1). P = 4 + 4 + 6 + 6 = 20 units A = 4 x 6 = 24 units2
