Fighting for Justice: How Ifrah Law Gives Back Pro Bono Matters Fighting for Justice: How Ifrah Law Gives Back

Ifrah Law attorneys participate in numerous pro bono projects across the country which engage their superior litigation and negotiating skills, and their commitment to justice. The firm is dedicated to defending individuals and organizations against unfair treatment by the government, and to promoting just and equitable treatment for all, regardless of race, gender, religion or ideas.

Your First Line of Defense When the government overreaches, Ifrah Law attorneys are there to push back.

Presidential Clemency Decisions

For several years Ifrah Law worked extensively with the Clemency Project, an Obama administration initiative that provided pro bono assistance to federal prisoners imprisoned under onerous and outdated sentencing guidelines. Ifrah Law secured the early release of one prisoner who had been sentenced to a mandatory minimum life sentence for low-level drug dealing. Due to the firm’s efforts, he served almost 12 ½ years, the length of time he would have served under current law; he was freed several weeks before his 39th birthday. The firm also succeeded in securing compassionate release for an elderly and ailing prisoner who had been formerly sentenced to life.

Ifrah Law succeeded in obtaining one of the only two clemency decisions made so far by Donald Trump since he took office. The President commuted our client’s prison sentence, resulting in his release from prison 19 years earlier than planned.

Securities Fraud & Sentencing

Ifrah Law has submitted an amicus brief in a case currently pending in the Southern District of New York concerning an individual sentenced to 85 years in prison for securities fraud. Our brief proposes an alternative framework for sentencing due to “exaggerated culpability” - when the formula used to calculate the length of a prison sentence gives disproportionate weight to the dollar value of damages, which in securities cases can be huge.

Veterans’ Matters

The firm represents pro bono a U. S The firm represents pro bono a U.S. Army JAG officer regarding his disability claims when his illness was misdiagnosed and resulted in the loss of a limb; we are seeking a determination that the injury occurred in the line of duty.

Protection of Children, the Disabled and Other Vulnerable or Disadvantaged Populations

Partner Jim Trusty was asked to consult by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on a high profile case involving the murder of a nine-year-old child; he provided guidance to local prosecutors on the most effective way to pursue a homicide conviction where no body was ever recovered by investigators.

Counsel Jeff Hamlin successfully negotiated a deal for two non-English –speaking naturalized citizens who became unwittingly involved in a fraudulent mortgage scheme. They ultimately testified in exchange for no charges being filed against them.

Jeff Hamlin also represented an elderly woman who disputed an insurance policy sold to her by a fraternal benefit society. He persuaded his opponent to proceed to arbitration and eventually settled the claim under satisfactory terms for our client.

Women’s Rights and Equality

Partner Michelle Cohen is Vice President of the National Women’s Party’s Executive Committee which provides educational programs, tours, exhibits, research and publications that explore the evolving role of women in modern society, and documents the continuing effort by women and men of all races, religions and ideas to win voting rights and equality for women. Human Rights & Asylum Issues

Associate David Yellin volunteered at Dulles Justice Center in response to Donald Trump’s Muslim Ban, providing information and assistance at the airport’s international arrivals terminal and working with detainees’ family and friends to obtain releases or explanations.

David Yellin also volunteered at Human Rights First’s asylum clinic where they help asylum seekers complete their asylum applications and prepare them to file pro se.

International Matters

Jim Trusty is working to negotiate an international prison transfer to Israel for a high profile figure convicted of financial crimes.

Conclusion Ifrah Law is committed to ensuring fair treatment by the government for all of its clients. When state attorneys general or federal regulators allege that someone has broken the rules, Ifrah Law fights to make sure that these entities follow the rules, as well.
