Meeting the health needs of children and young people. Slough School Nurses Meeting the health needs of children and young people. Explain the team in Slough/ East Berkshire: Describe the members of your team as friendly approachable, and emphasise that you provide a non judgemental service. Locality Manager- qualified nurse and school nurse School Nurses- SCPHN qualification and nursing backgrounds in various specialties. Staff Nurses – qualified nurses in a variety of ward and community specialties. Health assistants – experience health professionals

Specialist Community Public Health Nurse. Who am I? Heather Bartlett Specialist Community Public Health Nurse. I am a qualified Children’s Nurse and a qualified School Nurse who is here to support all of your health and well- being needs. I work within a team of school nurses and with other professionals in school and the community. Explain background and how came into school nursing. If I don’t know will find answers from other SN members as all different specialities and expertise. Access to other healthcare providers to find answers. You may also wish to include staff from other services such as youth workers or social workers that you work in partnership with that will have regular contact with the children/young people you are supporting. If you do this you should be clear which staff will have access to confidential information given to you by the young people and which will not. For instance if you introduce the staff at a school office, if they help coordinate appointments, but make it clear that they will know why the young person is accessing the service.

What do we do? I am here to answer questions you may have or give advice and support for a variety of health needs: Medical conditions General Health Emotional Health Mental Health Weight Management Sexual Health and Relationships Drugs and Alcohol Smoking Advice, support. Stress not an emergency or crisis service. Explain where local services may be found A&E, GP, Walk-In, garden clinic, Samaritans, Childline etc. There may be some things that I do not know the answer for, in which case I will ask a colleague and get back to you. The School Nurse Service, works both in your community and in your school . All communities have a range of health services for children, young people and their families. This could be your local walk in clinic , or your GP. It is part of our role to make sure you know about these, and also to work with our colleagues in the community to plan and deliver them. As well as supporting services in the community we also offer our own universal service to every child and young person. This means that any child or young person can access support directly from us around common health issues.

A confidential service This means that you can discuss personal information in confidence and private. We will not discuss your personal information with anyone else without your permission. This includes parents and teachers. We would only pass on your information in order to protect you or someone else from serious harm. Whenever possible we would discuss this with you first. When you access your school nurse your information and the help you have asked for will be kept confidential. We may collect anonymous data for the purposes of providing further services tailored to the health needs of certain communities. Part of our job is to ensure you are kept safe from harm- if we feel you are at risk from someone or yourself we are duty bound to inform only the appropriate professionals this may include your; SENCO/ Pastoral support, social worker and/or parents. We would inform you of this first and not put you at any further risk of harm.

How do you contact me? Ask a teacher to refer you- you do not have to tell them what for. Call the office 01753-635041 Send your question to myschoolnursebhft@berkshire.nhs.uk At times you may be referred by school staff- they will inform you of this before I visit you. You can ask a member of the school staff to send a referral form but do not have to tell them why- just that you would like to speak to the school nurse. You can call the office and leave a message for me if I am not there. You can text our Berkshire school nursing service and receive confidential advice for a question you may have. Your SENCO/ Pastoral support may have concerns that they feel would be best supported by the school nurse or medical questions that they would like advice on. They will inform you of the referral but if they feel it is necessary you will be expected to attend. Please note- we are not an emergency or crisis service and our working hours are currently term time only. My hours of work are Mon 09:00 – 15:00, Tue 09.30 – 15.00, Wed 08:30 – 16:30, Thurs 09:30 – 17:30 and Fri 08:30- 14:00. If you have an immediate need please contact the appropriate professional which may include your GP, A&E, Samaritans, NSPCC/ Childline.

We would like to help you engage with us in more innovative ways: Find information from us at myschoolnursebhft We have recently launched our School Nursing Facebook and Instagram pages. These pages are designed to share public health information with you on a variety of issues that we cover and national information that may impact your health and wellbeing. The service is not designed as a messaging service and we will not give individual advice, please use our texting service for confidential support and advice. Explain service provision and when SN will check and post etc.. Facebook - You can like the page and receive regular posts or pop in and out when you like. If you like the page only those who are your friends on Facebook will know. We hope this will not put you off from liking as we feel all the information shared is important to you and your friends so spread the word. Instagram - You can find public health information under the #myschoolnursebhft or #teenhealth in addition you can # your school to find out when the nurses will be in to immunise (HPV/ DTP/ MenC/ MMR) and when your School Nurse will be holding clinics/ drop-ins or health promotion sessions. Ask for all students to complete survey monkey at the end of term so we can adjust our pages to meet their needs. Find information from us at myschoolnursebhft or # your school for local events.
