Outline Prophecies about the Shepherd Messiah Jesus Christ’s role as the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ Shepherds his flock Jesus Christ the risen Lord is Shepherd

Prophecies about the Shepherd Messiah

Ezekiel 34:23 (NIV) 23 I will place over them one Shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their Shepherd. Ezekiel 37:24 (NIV) — 24 “ ‘My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one Shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.

Micah 5:2 (NIV) 2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Micah’s prophecy is alluded to in Matthew Matthew 2:6 (NIV) — 6 “ ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will Shepherd my people Israel.’” Micah also prophesies… Micah 5:4 (NIV) — 4 He will stand and Shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.

Zechariah 13:7 (NIV) 7 “Awake, sword, against my Shepherd, against the man who is close to me!” declares the Lord Almighty. “Strike the Shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones. Zechariah’s prophesy speaks to the suffering and persecuted Good Shepherd who is Jesus the Christ.

Matthew 26:31 (NIV) 31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ The Lord Himself refers to Zechariah’s prophesy at the right time confirming His ministry.

See also Mk 6:34 ; Jn 11:52 See also Mk 6:34 ; Jn 11:52 Mark 6:34 (NIV) — 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a Shepherd. If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish. John 10:27 (NIV) — 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. He knows His own sheep

See also Jn 10:3 ; Jn 10:5 ; Jn 10:16 ; Jn 10:27 John 10:4 (NIV) — 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.
