MOTION Introduction. MOTION  Motion is defined as when an object changes position over time when compared to a reference point.  A reference point is.
All quantities in Physics can be categorized as either a scalar or a vector quantity. A scalar quantity has magnitude (amount) only without direction.

Speed vs Velocity. Learning Target I can explain the difference between speed and velocity. I can explain the difference between speed and velocity.
Motion, Speed, & Velocity. Motion Motion is a change in position (relative to a reference point) *reference point- stationary (still) object.
Kinematics. Kinematics-What is it? Kinematics is the study of motion. –Motion is always defined in terms of change in location.  Locations or Positions.
Motion How fast is fast?. Motion Motion – change in position relative to a reference point. Frame of reference – a system used to identify the precise.
Chapter 1: Matter in Motion  Motion= a change in position over time  Reference point= an object that stays in place and shows us that something is moving.
Speed Velocity and Acceleration. What is the difference between speed and velocity? Speed is a measure of distance over time while velocity is a measure.
Distance, Displacement Speed, and Velocity Frame of Reference - In order to measure the distance of an object we must use a frame of reference. Point.

Distance vs Displacement 5 meters east in 2 seconds 3 meters south in 1 second The total distance d traveled is The total displacement d is Speed = d / t = v Velocity= d / t = v

Vector mathematics is different than scalar mathematics Scalars are just numbers and can be added with regular math. They add up to a sum. Vectors have direction and must be drawn to scale and connected head-to-tail. They add up to a resultant. HEAD Tail Start Finish

2 miles 3 miles 4 miles Road runner travels 5 miles before Marvin sends him back. Road runner takes a shortcut back that saves him a mile. If the whole round trip took 1 hour, what is roadrunner’s a) speed? b) displacement ?

Practice; 1. A runner runs 500 meters due east and 1000 meters due south. Find the distance and displacement 2. A plane travels 3000 miles from California to New York in 5 hours, stays in NY 1 hour to refuel, then flies back again. Find the average speed and average velocity for the round trip flight .

When direction changes, average velocity = average speed Ex; Wilbert drives 2.0 km east in 15 minutes to make a delivery. He then goes 3.0 km west in 20 minutes to make a delivery to the other side of town. Find Wilberts’ a) average speed b) average velocity During his 35 minutes of travel
