Do Now: Defending Prohibition The ad on the right is one issued by the Women’s Christian Temperance Movement in favor of the 18th Amendment. (Prohibition) 1) What is Prohibition? 2) What message was this ad trying to portray? 3) Provide 2 reasons someone might vote in favor or prohibition 4) Provide 2 reasons someone might vote in opposition of prohibition.

“Dear Parents”: A Letter from a Flapper (1920’s Shade Throwing at it’s finest) During the 1920’s there was a lot of tension between the youth culture or “flapper generation” and the older style “pre-war” adult culture of the 1890’s and 1900’s. Today you will read a famous editorial letter written by a young adult female from the flapper era who addresses “the parents” of the flapper generation and attacks the stereotyping and gives advice for how to better parent in this “New Age”. As you read you will answer a series of questions on a separate sheet of paper. The questions are numbered and can be found throughout the reading. Once you’ve answered the analysis questions, your job is to write a response letter (choose from 4 writing prompts provided) using evidence from the letter.

Harlem Renaissance to Hip Hop The Harlem Renaissance is often seen as a rebirth of arts and culture in the African American community. It provided a voice for African Americans that was often silenced by traditional society. Many people compare this movement with the Hip Hop movement that rose quickly through the urban African American communities of the 1980’s and continues to dominate popular culture today. Today we will compare the messaging from Jazz and Literary masterpieces from the Harlem Renaissance with the messaging of Tupac Shakur from the “Hip Hop” Revolution.
