Working with Teens A good handout to go with this presentation is the Service Leadership Programs Brochure or Booklet. Kiwanis has three Service Leadership Programs focused on working with and empowering teens. Builders Club Key Club Key Leader

Building leaders since 1975 Middle school and junior high school students (ages 12-15) becoming young service leaders Builders Club is a community-service program for junior high or middle school students worldwide. It is an international student-led organization providing its members with opportunities to perform service, build character, and develop leadership. The Builders Club vision is to develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service.

What is Builders Club? MOTTO: Building leaders VISION: To develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service.  MISSION: Builders Club is an international student-led organization providing its members with opportunities to perform service, build character and develop leadership.

Builders Club Core Values Character building Leadership Inclusiveness Caring Character Building: The ability to do the right thing, even when it might be the unpopular choice. Leadership: The ability to listen, communicate, serve, and guide others. Inclusiveness: Accepting and welcoming differences in other people. Caring: The act of being concerned about or interested in another person or situation.

Builders Club Today, Builders Clubs exist in more than 1000 schools and community locations, primarily in the United States. Growth efforts, however, have taken the Builders Club experience internationally to Canada, the Caribbean nations, Central and South America, and most recently, to Asia and Australia. Today, Builders Clubs exist in more than 1000 schools and community locations!

K E Y C L U B The world’s largest high school service organization Key Club is one of the great organizations Kiwanis sponsors. Service club for high school age students. Key Club was the first of its kind started in 1925 in Sacramento, California at Sacramento High School

Key Club Mission and Vision Vision: To develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service. Mission: An international, student-led organization providing its members with opportunities to perform service, build character and develop leadership.

Key Club Core Values Character building Leadership Inclusiveness Caring Key Club has the same core values as Builders Club Members base their leadership and service on these principles. Values, mission, and vision guide decisions and Key Club strategic planning.

Key Club is reaching out. Almost 5,000 clubs Almost 245,000 members 28 countries 12 million hours of service each year Of the 28 countries, 5 have been new to Key Club in the last 4 years. Growth and interest from young people all over the world. Key Club is unique in many countries and is appealing to make communities.

Experiential leadership program for teens Key Leader is a weekend service leadership retreat for High School students. In most cases, events are held at residence camp facilities Teens are placed into “neighborhoods” for the weekend, which allows for group work and discussion during break out sessions Service Leadership is one of the foundations of Kiwanis, from K-Kids to Classic Kiwanis. Experiential Leadership Development focusing on Service Leadership and 5 Key Principles – Personal Integrity, Personal Growth, Respect, Building Community and Pursuit of Excellence Program is open to all students ages 14-18 – approximately 50% of the graduates are Key Club members and 50% are not Key Club members Since the program’s launch in 2005 there have been 176 events with over 8,000 graduates The registration fee for an event is $175 for any student and $150 for Key Club/Builders Club members.

Key Leader Mission To inspire young people to achieve their personal best through service leadership. The Key Leader mission is the driving force of the program, which is the core of Kiwanis since 1915 – how to better serve others and the children of the world

5 Principles of Service Leadership Personal integrity Personal growth Respect Building community Pursuit of excellence Integrity is the students following the values that they hold, doing the right thing. Growth – Developing in Mind, Body, and Spirit Respect – Showing consideration for self, others, and property Community – Developing relationships to achieve positive goals Pursuit of Excellence - Expecting and achieving the best Students spend from 6:00pm Friday until noon on Sunday learning our Five Principles, as well as other life skills, and how to incorporate them into their daily lives

Key Leader Since launch in April 2005: 176 events with over 8000 student graduates Held in 38 different states and 4 countries outside U.S. Since launch is April 2005 there have been 176 events with over 8000 student graduates We have held Key Leader numerous times in almost every state (38 states)in the United States. Although there are some East Coast states missing, we have been able to draw many students to surrounding state’s Key Leader events. Successful events have been run in Brazil, Canada, Grand Cayman island and Malaysia. We are excited to possibly hold future events in China, El Salvador and Jamaica in 2009. World Camp began in 2007 and Hawaii Teen Experience began in 2008 - we have had 23 countries represented since that first year.
