CountrySTAT - A statistical framework in action 16/09/2018 Administrative and Descriptive Metadata Matrix specific footnotes - stored as part of the matrix Administrative metadata provides information to help manage a resource, such as when and how it was created, file type and other technical information, and who can access it. Descriptive metadata describes a resource for purposes such as discovery and identification. It can include elements such as title, abstract, author, and keywords. Structural metadata indicates how compound objects are put together, for example, how pages are ordered to form chapters. CountrySTAT Objectives CountrySTAT - A statistical framework in action 16/09/2018 CountrySTAT Objectives Capacity Building Facilitate data use by policy makers and researchers Provide statistical standards, data and metadata exchange tools and related methods Build capacity for countries (coordination, harmonization and enhanced value to data) Data Exchange Data Use Member Nations have requested FAO’s assistance in establishing or further developing their own statistical information systems. FAO Statistics Division has decided to respond to that request with CountrySTAT[1]. An informal international expert consultation meeting on CountrySTAT enriched the principle response with concrete features in July 2003[2]. CountrySTAT - A statistical framework in action 16/09/2018 CountrySTAT: Operational Status in detail CountrySTAT: Operational Status by Countries and Regions as of September 2005. The selection process of the pilot countries has been based upon a multi-criteria roster, for which quality of data and methodology as well as FAO Statistical Division’s experiences made with the offices was essential. In addition, infrastructural questions like internet availability, (potential) unity of data collections and last not least the strong willingness of the top managerial support for such a project was important. The partnerships were intentionally based on a low financial contribution from FAO side to emphasize and ensure a partnership on equal basis. The CountrySTAT statistical system is aiming to match the needs of policy makers and researchers on the national level based on the FAOSTAT statistical methodologies. FAO has set up prototypes of CountrySTAT systems in partnership with national statistical offices of three pilot countries in Kyrgyz Republic, Kenya, and Ghana. These pilot studies are representing typical conditions of countries in which the primary sector is of major importance for the food security as well as the development of the country. All pilot studies are utilizing the core CountrySTAT framework and have a series of key domains alias thematic folders related to the food and agriculture sector. For example, the core framework includes price and quantity modules based on primary production of crops and livestock. Final evaluations of the pilot studies will focus on the underlying statistical framework and analytical methodologies employed as well the information technology solutions employed to meet the needs of the countries as well as for the semantic and formal needs of regional and international agricultural statistical data exchangers. The CountrySTAT project will give specific recommendations on how to proceed with CountrySTAT approach in order to optimize efforts on national, regional, and international level for national agricultural statistical information systems as a decision support tool. CountrySTAT shares the analytical framework of FAOSTAT accounts as a basis for its core data sets. In all CountrySTAT participating offices each CountrySTAT System’s core is structured in the same rigid way, thus once a user has familiarized himself with CountrySTAT Core Structure he will be able to navigate immediately in any other CountrySTAT system. http://www.fao.org/faostat/diagrams/Coreframework_en.html Presented by Mr Naman KEITA | FAO Statistics Division 16/09/2018 Naman Keita | FAO Statistics Division

These satellite modules with detailed, specialized data collections can be structured according to the requirements of the country. Every table/matrix can be associated to more than one thematic folder, within as well as across the core and detailed thematic modules.
