Objective: 8.L.5.1 –Summarize how food provides the energy and molecules required for building materials, growth, and survival of all organisms.
All Living Things Share Four Characteristics of Life All living things have an ability to acquire materials and energy All living things have an ability to respond to their environment Living things are highly organized, from the smallest part to the largest All living things have an ability to reproduce

All Living Things Need energy nutrients
The ability to work and work is make something against a force. What is energy? The ability to work and work is make something against a force.
What make Energy so special? Energy can be found in many things, and takes many forms. Energy can’t be created or destroyed. Energy can be transferred and transformed. Energy can travel through space. A huge amount of energy is located in the molecules that make up all matter
Why do our cells need energy? To Survive and Thrive To grow and develop To carry out daily functions To repair To reproduce How do our cells get energy to do work? From the energy stored in the chemical bonds of food molecules.
Is it Food?
What is Food? Food is an organic substance containing carbohydrates, proteins, and/or fats that serve as both fuel and building material for an organism
All food are Nutrients but not all Nutrients are Food What are nutrients? Substances that organisms must take in to carry out their life processes. They can be organic (contains Carbon… living) material. They can be inorganic (no carbon… non-living) material.
All food are Nutrients but not all Nutrients are Food Organisms require inorganic nutrients such as water, vitamins and minerals to grow and survive. However, they are not a source of energy nor are they used a building materials. Inorganic materials are nutrients but not food.
THE SIX ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS
Organic Nutrients Carbohydrates Proteins organic compounds that consist of long chains of amino acids organic compounds found in living tissue Provide energy Help build and repair muscles Include sugars, starch, and cellulose.
Organic Nutrients Fats/lipids a natural oily or greasy substance occurring in animal. Also called triglycerides Helps process vitamins and minerals 2nd source of energy for cells Acts as the body's insulator protecting organs and absorbing shocks
Inorganic Nutrients Vitamins Minerals Needed for the body to work properly, for growth and development, and overall, for maintaining normal health. Plays an important role in bodily functions such as metabolism, immunity and digestion Vital for growth and development encourages chemical reactions in cells 13 essential vitamins, including vitamins A, C, D, E, and K and B vitamins such as riboflavin and folate
Inorganic Nutrients Water Water comprises about ¾ of the human mass and is a major component in every cell. Water transports nutrients, eliminates waste, serves as a catalyst for chemical reactions
