From E. Donovan presentation What about the wave activity Overview in GSM Pseudo-breakup ~ 0603 UT Substorm ~ 0630 UT From E. Donovan presentation What about the wave activity In the magnetotail? Pseudo-breakup Substorm
Thd near-earth s/c Thd, X~ - 10 RE, 0500-0700 UT Filter banks data Magnetic and Electric activities 3 Hz, 12 Hz increase The electrostatic activity starts before the local dipolarisation and the start of the increase of the energetic ion pressure (cf. Jacquey) Timing equivalent to pseudo-breakup timing (Donovan) Thinning of the CS: Thd enters into the Lobe region just before dipolarisation Large Vx >0 (earthward) and Vy<0
Thc in the mid tail Thc, X~ - 16 RE, 0500-0700 UT Thc enters into the Lobe region around the pseudobreakup time and come back into the PS around 0637 UT: Thinning of the CS due to the near-earth current sheet disruption or vertical motion of the PS? Filter banks data Pseudo-breakup: no wave activity Small electrostatic activity during the Lobe period close to the boundary Main substorm: Electromagnetic activity starts on Thc ~5-7 min later than on Thd As the large Vx>0
Thb in the mid tail Thb, X~ - 20 RE, 0500-0700 UT Thb as Thc goes into the Lobe around Pseudobreakup time and enters again into the PS around 0637 UT Filter banks data Electrostatic activity enhanced when Thb is close to the boundary (Open/closed Field lines) Electromagnetic activity during the dipolarisation, same level as Thd or Thc: Thb detects the dipolarisation and Large Vx>0 ~5-7 min later than Thd almost at the same time as Thc after a period in the lobe region
Pseudo-breakup Thd, 0600-0620 UT Thd data, around Pseudo-breakup ~ 0603 UT Electrostatic waves start ~ 060430 UT Electromagnetic waves ~ 060830 UT Thinning of the CS then thickenning with a large Vx>0 ( and Vy<0)~ 060830 UT
Main substorm Thd, 0620-0650 UT Thd data, around Pseudo-breakup ~ 0603 UT Electromagnetic and electrostatic waves detected when Thd exits the PS Large Vx>0 during the boundary crossing Thinning of the CS then thickenning with a Vx < 0 ( and Vy>0)~ 060830 UT
Thd, particle burst : 0612-0642 UT Oscillations Of very thin Current sheet (Lobe entry) Dipolarisation Multiple Parallel current structures (FR?) Flow reversal Vx >0 then <0 But associated With the Boundary Xing Distribution Of ions? Vy,i < 0 Boundary effect? Whistler emissions
Multiple Parallel current structures (FR?) Thd, particle burst : 0612-0642 UT Multiple Parallel current structures (FR?) Whistler emissions: Right-hand circularly Polarised Degree of polarisation ~ 1 Angle of propagation ~ 0 Ellipticity ~ + 1 Helicity ~1 Emissions during and after the local dipolarisation
For Thd (near-earth s/c): Summary/questions For Thd (near-earth s/c): Pseudobreakup (~ 0603 UT) and Main substorm (~ 0630 UT) are associated with a strong electromagnetic wave activity and a dipolarisation For Thc and Thb (mid-tail s/c): Pseudobreakup time correspond to a motion into the Lobe région associated with electrostatic activity close to the boundary. The CS is still thinning. Dipolarisation and large positive Vx occur 5-7 min later than on Thd Whistler emissions are observed before, during and after the local dipolarisation on Thd. Multiple parallel current signatures (FR?) are observed on Thd
