The Basics - Sentences There are 4 basic types of sentences. Statements – These are sentences that tell something. They end with a period. Questions – These are sentences we ask to find out something. They end with a question mark. Exclamations – These are sentences that express a strong feeling. They end with an exclamation point. Commands – These are sentences that tell someone what to do. They end with a period.

Parts of a Sentence A sentence has two main parts. Subject – This is who or what your sentence is about. Predicate – This part of the sentence tells what the subject does The subject and predicate can be one word or more than one word.

The Subject The complete subject can be one word or a phrase of several words. The most important word in the subject is the noun. A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea.

The Predicate The complete predicate often tells what the subject does. The VERB shows the action. Sometimes the predicate tells what the subject HAS. It uses the verbs HAVE and HAS Other times the predicate tells what the subject IS or IS LIKE It uses the verb form of BE (IS, AM, ARE).

Peer Review In your groups, open up your documents and trade chromebooks with your partners. You will be reading and reviewing your partners writing. BE THOROUGH!!! Give their work as much attention as you would hope they give yours! You will be reading their essays several times; each time with a different purpose.

Peer Review First Read Through – Overview Read through the entire essay. Does it seem complete? YES / NO Does it make sense? YES / NO If you answered NO to either of those questions, explain why.

Peer Review Second Read Through – Grammar Read back through the essay. This time focus on marking mistakes as indicated below. If you see any misspelled words, highlight them in RED. If you see any capitalization errors, highlight that letter in BLUE. If you see any missing punctuation, highlight the empty space in ORANGE. If you see any incomplete or run-on sentences, UNDERLINE the entire sentence.
