God the Son - God with us; God the Holy Spirit - God in Us The Triune God God the Father - God around us; God the Son - God with us; God the Holy Spirit - God in Us

The Holy Spirit: God In Us The Deity of the Spirit is difficult for some to understand because: The Deity of the Father is assumed in the Bible, The Deity of the Son is affirmed and argued for, The Deity of the Spirit is inferred

The Holy Spirit: God In Us Some False ideas about the Holy Spirit: The Spirit is a thing, not a person Understanding the Spirit is not important The significance of the Spirit’s role is limited today or not important

The Holy Spirit: God In Us In a variety of ways, the Bible makes it clear that the Holy Spirit is not a "thing" but a "person."

The Spirit is a Person - John 16:8 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate (Holy Spirit) won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. [8] And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.

The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit is a Down Payment and Proof of the fact that we belong to God for all eternity.

Ephesians 1:13 And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.

Ephesians 1:14 The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.

The Holy Spirit is a Person In John 14, Jesus gives a name to the Spirit. The name or title is "Paraklete" - which could be translated as: “Helper" “Counselor" "Advocate"

John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, [17] even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

The Holy Spirit is 100% God The Spirit gives life (Romans 8: 2) The Spirit was personally involved in creation (Gen 1: 2) The Spirit gives life (Romans 8: 2) The Spirit is all-knowing (1 Corinthians 2: 10-12) The Spirit is eternal and powerful (Hebrews 9:14) The Holy Spirit is omnipresent, meaning present everywhere at the same time (Psalm 139: 7) The Lord is the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3: 17-18)

Spirit in Creation - Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. [2] The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Spirit Gives Life - Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. [2] For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

The Spirit is all-knowing 1 Corinthians 2:10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

The Spirit is all-knowing 1 Corinthians 2:11  For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

The Spirit is all-knowing 1 Corinthians 2:12  Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

The Spirit is all-knowing 1 Corinthians 2:13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

The Spirit is all-knowing 1 Corinthians 2:14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

The Spirit is all-knowing 1 Corinthians 2:15-16 The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. [16] “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

The Lord is the Spirit 2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

The Lord is the Spirit 2 Corinthians 3:17 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is 100% God God is Spirit (John 4:24) The Spirit convicts of sin (John 16: 8) The Holy Spirit speaks (Acts 8:29) The Spirit empowers the people of God (Zec 4: 6) The Holy Spirit is equal to the Father and Son (Matthew 28:19)

God is Spirit - John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth

And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” The Spirit Speaks - Acts 8:29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.”

The Holy Spirit is 100% God Only a being who is equal to God (Matthew 28:19) and possesses the attributes of omniscience, omnipresence and eternity could be defined as God.

The Importance of the Spirit The only other person that the Father sends besides the Son, is the Spirit

The Holy Spirit is a Person According to the Bible, the Spirit has all the qualities we associate with personality - emotion, will, meaning and purpose.

The Personality of the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit has a mind and emotions (Ephesians 4:20) The Spirit will dwell and enlighten (John 14: 6-11) The Spirit has intelligence and knowledge to teach all things and bring to remembrance. (John 14:26)

The Personality of the Holy Spirit The Spirit has his own will (1 Corinthians 12:11) The Spirit guides us (Romans 8:14) God’s gifts are inspired by one and the same Spirit, giving to each one in private as he wills (1 Corinthians 12:4) The Holy Spirit intercedes (Romans 8:26-28)

The Complexities of the Triune God We must understand that there isn’t a power structure within the Trinity. God the Father, God the Son & God the Holy Spirit are co- equals because they are one God.

Complexities of the Trinity Although we can’t comprehend why or how, the Holy Spirit was (1) responsible for the birth of Jesus, (2) Jesus didn’t begin his ministry to the world until He was filled with the Holy Spirit, (3) Jesus offered Himself on the cross through the Holy Spirit, and (4) Jesus breathed out the Holy Spirit onto His disciples, while still on earth.

The Spirit Gave Birth to Jesus - Matthew 1:20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit - Luke 4:1 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, [2] where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.

Thru the Spirit, Jesus went to the cross - Hebrews 9:14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

3 Examples of the Trinity’s, mysterious, complex, co-equality

Example #1 - 2 Peter 1:20-21 Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding,[21] or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Summary: 2 Peter 1:20-21 Credits the Holy Spirit with inspiring the scriptures while 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says that it was God who inspired the scriptures.

Example #2 - John 20:19 That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said.

John 20:20 As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord!

John 20:21 Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”

Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” John 20:22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

Summary: In John 20:19-22 Jesus Christ gives the Holy Spirit to His disciples, while in John 14:26 Jesus said that the Father would send the Holy Spirit in His name.

Example #3 – Ephesians 1:19-20 - Father I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power [20] that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.

John 10:18 - Son For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

Romans 1:3-4 - Spirit The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line, 4 and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Summary: In Ephesians 1:19-20, God is credited with raising Jesus from the dead, while John 10:18 credits it to Jesus’ power, and Romans 3:1-4 credits Jesus’ resurrection to the power of the Holy Spirit.
