Answer the following: 1. What do you do when you come across an unfamiliar word? Look it up Use context clues to try and figure it out Ignore it Break it down to see if you can tell what the definition is by looking at each part of the word (prefixes, suffixes, and roots) 2. Then explain: Does that method usually work for you? Why do you think you prefer it over the others?

Take Out Your 1960’s Sheet and your homework

Share what you wrote last night with you table group: Why is empathy essential to achieving social justice?

Discuss with your group: What social movement do you find most interesting (Gay Rights, Women’s Rights, Civil Rights, or Counterculture? Why? Make sure each person has time to share; you have three minutes!

How might this discussion topic relate to defining words?

1960’s Social Justice Groups Vocab Day 1960’s Social Justice Groups

Share with me: How can unfamiliar vocabulary make certain subjects feel unapproachable or even boring?

Words we will cover in class: Unconventional Lynching Oppressive Militant Tactics Migration Contradicted Boycott Reluctantly Deliberate Juggernaut De facto Grassroots Liberal Woo Pivotal Catapulted Disheartened Proponents Escalating

Our Readings on Social Justice Groups Tomorrow: Out of everything you will read, I wrote up a list of over 150 words that might throw you off. We are going to practice defining unfamiliar words as an essential part of reading to understand a text You will be quizzed on social justice vocabulary HOWEVER you will not be quizzed on the this entire list—just the terms I made the quizlet from (you will get a vocab sheet on this later this week)

Homework: Either use a real or online dictionary tonight to define 25 more words from the list. We’ll be using this skill tomorrow as well, as we begin to read about the different social justice movements of the 1960’s.
