The growth of tourism Learning objectives: I can explain the economic, social and political causes in the growth in tourism.

Why are destinations like this developing? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyIPMRci7Xw Can you think of economic, social and political reasons?

Tourism growth

Describe the pattern shown on the graph (4) Things to remember: Write a paragraph analysing the graph, using dates, numbers (millions) and global regions in your answer. Try and look at the overall trends rather than writing a detailed year-by-year account. Include some simple statistics, such as the difference between 1950 and 2005 and percentage changes.

Self assessment: annotate your work if there is anything you could have added It has increased approximately 70 times, from about 10 million in 1950 to 700 million in 2000. Since around 1960 the rate of increase has been fairly consistent, except for a short period during the early 1980s. Europe remains the dominant international destination, but there has been a significant rise in the popularity of the Americas and Asia and the Pacific. The Middle East and Africa remain relatively insignificant.

Why has there been a growth in tourism? Categorize factors into social, economic and political reasons

What may be some of the future trends? https://vimeo.com/7061838 Watch the video and make notes on: What will be some of the changes in transport? What other changes may happen? What are some of the emerging destinations? What may some of the impacts of the changes be?

Global Tourism : Tourism Trends / Why is tourism growing? 2 Possible Questions : Why has tourism grown so much over recent years? Which factors are most important in explaining the growth of global tourism? The tourist industry is one of the world’s largest industries – both in the number of people it employs, and the wealth it generates for countries. For some countries it is the biggest part of their economy – such as Hawaii, Bermuda, the Bahamas and Nepal. For the worlds’ number one tourists destination – France – the income from tourism is a major contribution to the country’s prosperity. A range of SOCIAL, ECONOMIC and TECHNOLOGICAL changes has resulted in the rise of the tourism industry as a major activity around the world. Longer paid holidays : In Britain employees can expect 20 or more days of paid holiday each year. This has increased hugely since the 1950s – when just 10 days was normal. So people can take more holidays now Shorter working hours : Many people are able to finish work early on Friday – or work ‘flexi-time’ – so they work some ‘long days’ and ‘short days’. This gives people more time to go on mini-break over a weekend. Transport improvements : Motorways which give quick travel to ports, airports and across countries, along with the Channel Tunnel, new airports and low-cost airlines all mean it is easier, cheaper and quicker to travel long distances than ever before. More affluence : Holidays cost money – but as people have become wealthier they choose to spend more of their money on holidays. Once families have met the cost of their house, their car, and food, - tourism is the next main area of spending. More awareness of holidays : Lots of TV programmes show different holidays, comparing resorts and whole satellite channels devoted to holiday ideas means more desire to go away for a few days. With retired people living longer and college students wanting to travel there are huge numbers of people looking for information about where to go next – who have the information, and money to travel. Cheaper holidays : The arrival of travel agents on the high streets competing with each other, low-cost air travel and cheap food abroad has meant the average cost of a holiday has come down in price

Using the textbook…. Explain the reasons for the growth in tourism (6) Success criteria: Categorise the factors into political, social and economic reasons You have 10 minutes to read the information You have 8 minutes to write your answer without the aid of the textbook

Growth in tourism (a) Explain how each of the following factors is responsible for the increase in the number of people taking holidays: • Disposable income • Increased leisure time • Developments in transport and communications • Changes in people’s freedom to travel. (b) Which of these factors would you use to explain why fewer people in LICs are ‘international tourists’?

Explain the economic and social factors that have caused a growth in tourism (6)

The reasons for growth of tourism in Vietnam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvtOdn27Ijk Watch above video- what are the human and physical attractions of Vietnam? Think, pair, share: Why would Vietnam want to promote tourism? What would be some of the barriers of Vietnam promoting tourism?

How the Vietnamese government promoted tourism Relax immigration controls (remove visa requirements). Vietnam is scrapping its visa requirements. Improve transport links (airports, roads and railways). Vietnam has rebuilt its main two international airports, it is updating highway 1 (the country's principal highway) and building a new high-speed rail link running the length of the country. Vietnam Airlines is also investing heavily in new planes, it has recently 12 state of the art Boeing Dreamliners. Deregulation. Vietnam is a communist country, but the government relaxed government control and allowed investment in the tourist sector. Improve tourist facilities like hotels and restaurants and golf courses. In Vietnam international chains like the Sheraton, Sofitel and Hyatt have been welcomed along with a rapid expansion of local hotels. Money is been invested in new golf courses, dive centres, etc. Improve local language skills e.g. start English classes (and other major languages e.g. Mandarin and Spanish). In Vietnam English is now the second language, but also other language skills, especially Mandarin are being developed. Advertising campaigns and links with international travel agents. Vietnam set up links with over 1,000 travel agents in more than 50 countries. Create tourism board and tourist information offices at home and abroad.

Think about this learning objective: Homework: Task 1: Make sure the notes on the factors influencing the growth of tourism are detailed enough (turquoise book p241-243) has more depth. Task 2: Complete the two 6 mark questions: Explain the factors that have led to a growth in tourism (6) Explain how political factors and government policies have led to a growth in tourism (6) Think about this learning objective: I can explain the economic, social and political causes in the growth in tourism. Could you answer the question above with economic or social factors?

Additional exam practice 1. Describe the growth in international tourism. (3) 2. Outline the reasons why many people now have more leisure time. (3) 3. Give two reasons why holidays have become more affordable. (2) 4. Explain how the EU has led to a growth in tourism. (6)
