Prepare for the Job Interview Take steps ahead of time to prepare for your successful job interview. The more prepared you are, the more confident you will be and it will show! More on confidence later. Make sure you are clear on the position description of the job you are interviewing for. Research the company you are applying with in advance. Go to their website and read what they say about themselves. Also, search for any recent news articles about this company. Have an extra copy of your resume with you. Be sure you know the directions to their location and have transportation arrangements made.

The Day of the Interview Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes ahead of your scheduled interview time. Be sure you are dressed appropriately for the position you are applying for and that your clothing is clean. Never wear jeans to a job interview even if that is the dress code. Do not bring anyone with you even to the reception area, If someone has given you a ride, make sure they remain outside in the car. If you have to bring your cell phone with you make sure it is turned off. Better yet, lock it in your vehicle while you are in the interview.

Introductions Many companies have a receptionist when you first enter their location. Be friendly and respectful when you introduce yourself. Often the receptionist is asked to provide input after your interview on his or her first impression of you. When you meet your interviewer (or in some cases interview team) be confident, shake hands and introduce yourself. Let them know you have an extra copy of your resume available if they need it.

Answering Job Interview Questions Without exception be honest. It is never OK to lie on your resume or in an interview. Be truthful but use caution when discussing any previous negative work experiences. Never make negative remarks about a previous employer, company or manager. If you are asked to describe a previous manager always make positive comments.

Answering Job Interview Questions There are two main types of job interview questions: factual and behavioral event questions. Factual simply asks specifics about dates and previous experiences. Behavioral event questions are used less often and will ask you to describe a specific situation from your previous work experience and how you handled that. Don't be in a rush to answer questions. It is better to pause a moment and think about your answer.

Asking Questions It is very common at the end of your job interview for you to be given the opportunity to ask questions. Have these questions prepared in advance. Some good suggestions would be for you to ask when they plan to make their decision. What will they be looking for in the first 90 days on the job. What qualities would make a successful candidate. Take notes as your questions are being answered, you can refer to these briefly in your thank you letter and point out skills and qualities that make you a good fit.

Ending the Job Interview and Follow Up Always sincerely thank the interviewer for the opportunity to meet with them. Within 24 hours, send a thank you note or at very least an email.
