Diary Entry # 1: Language Some say that without language, complex thoughts are impossible. Many people even agree that language is what makes humans capable of such great accomplishments. The notion behind Newspeak is that by simplifying and dumbing down language, you simplify and dumb down those who use it. Do you think this is possible? What about texting? Do you think this is a modern form of Newspeak? Have you seen “texting language” bleed into your academic writings? Do you think there are things that exist which we don’t understand because we lack the language to describe or experience it? Explain in detail.

Diary Entry #2: The Past Has there been a time where you were so caught up in the past that it affected your actions, behaviors, and thoughts in the present? Explain this occurrence. Do you think it is possible for people to truly leave the past behind and only live in the present? What are pros and cons to living each way? Does one prove more successful?

Diary Entry #3: Julia What is your reaction to Julia? What do you think of her character? Do you admire her? Despise her? Do you trust her or are you suspicious of her? What do you think is going to happen between her and Winston? Add any other details you find fitting.

Do you take any action to overcome this fear? Incorporate details. Or Safe Haven Do you have a place you consider to be a safe haven? Describe this place. When did you start going there? What do you do there? Does anyone else know about it?

Diary Entry 5: Risky Business Explain a time you did something rebellious (class appropriate!!!). How did you feel when you were doing it? Did you know it was wrong? What were the consequences, if any? How did you react to the consequences? Were you able to bounce back from your mistake or did it have a great influence on the future?

Diary Entry # 6: The Future What do you think about this prediction of the future? Do you agree or disagree? What is your vision of the future? How and WHY do you think your vision of the future will come about (what factors will lead to your vision of the future)?

Diary Entry #8: Alternative Ending What do you think would happen if Winston somehow managed to escape the Ministry of Love instead of being defeated by Big Brother? How would he have done this? Where would he stand with Julia? Where would he go? Essentially, write a brief alternative ending to the novel!
