Overview on Cohesion Policy & Water

Key facts MS have to comply with EU legislation on water: “Drinking Water Directive” “Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive” “Water Framework Directive” Significant need for support especially in new MS to meet those objectives and provide those basic environmental services on water Cohesion Policy 2007-2013: € 22 billion for water: €14 billion on waste water €8 billion for drink water 2

Role of Cohesion Policy Co-finance capital intensive investments in the needed water infrastructure: help MS to comply with EU water legislation Exchange of good practices and networking/interregional or cross-border cooperation on water projects Help MS/regions to develop water management linked to new challenge of climate change
