Today I will study the components of an ecosystem because I need to understand how living things depend on one another.

POPULATIONS

EQ: What factors influence population growth in an area? Share your answers with your elbow partner. Share with the class.

Population: a group of organisms of one species in the same area.

Biotic (prefix Bio means life)– any living thing

Abiotic – non living thing

Overpopulation– excess number of same species living together in the same place.

Exponential Growth : when population growth expands or increases at a constant pace

Limiting Factor : a factor that inhibits population growth of a species population.

Logistic Growth :  is when the population growth rate decreases as the population reaches carrying capacity. Accounts for limiting factors

Competition : When organisms’ attempt to use the same resources Competition : When organisms’ attempt to use the same resources. (food, shelter, water)

Carrying capacity :  the maximum, number of organisms of a particular species that can be supported indefinitely in a given environment.

Scale : the structural change in size of a population

Reflection: Now in your notebook on page 1 answer the Essential Question using at least 5 of your vocabulary words in the paragraph.

Community : a group of interacting populations of species living in the same area.
