Map Monday On Thursday, you will be taking our first map quiz of the year. Today’s bell-ringer is a practice version, so you are aware of the procedures that apply during map quizzes. Please date today’s bell-ringer 8/31. Number 1-5 We will go through the procedures and questions together.

2 1 Major Lines of Latitude/Longitude

Continents 3 4

Oceans 5

Earth-Sun Relationships (How does one affect the other?) ©2012, TESCCC

Earth’s position in the solar system ©2012, TESCCC

Earth’s Tilt Tilt: the angle of incline of the Earth’s axis affects the temperature of a place. Revolution: the Earth’s trip around the sun (one year) Rotation: the Earth completely rotates on its axis every 24 hours. (alternating between night and day) ©2012, TESCCC

Earth’s Tilt Direct rays: When a hemisphere is tilted toward the sun, the direct rays of the sun or angle of incidence is higher and it is summer in that hemisphere. Indirect rays: When a hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, the direct rays of the sun or angle of incidence is lower and it is winter in that hemisphere. ©2012, TESCCC

5 Major Circles of Latitude Draw this in your notes!!! ©2012, TESCCC

Earth’s Tilt Equinox: when the Sun’s rays fall directly on the equator, day and night time hours are almost equal (Spring and Fall) Solstice: One of two days (June 21 and December 22) on which the Sun’s rays strike directly on the Tropic of Cancer or the Tropic of Capricorn, marking the beginning of summer and winter. ©2012, TESCCC

Weather vs. Climate Weather Climate Conditions of the atmosphere in one place during a limited time. Climate Weather patterns that an area typically experiences over a long period of time. ©2012, TESCCC

Activity Determine if the questions are True or False. Please write your answers with either a capital ‘T’ or capital ‘F’ If the answer is false, please correct whatever has made it incorrect! When done, be sure that you have all of the information filled out on your world map that will potentially show up on your map quiz Friday! Add in the Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle (these could show up on Friday’s quiz as well)! The Unit One Questions you picked up is due September 12- the day of your 1st test! ©2012, TESCCC
