Science Fair Project: The Physics of a Roller Coaster

Objective: To build and design a roller coaster. To explain and calculate the energy transformations occurring during a ride. To explain and calculate the forces acting on a rider. To explain and calculate the velocities and accelerations (g’s) acting on a rider.

Vocabulary: Work Kinetic Energy Potential Energy Force Gravity Acceleration Velocity Height

Learning on Your Own: Roller Coaster Physics Roller Coaster Physics Explained howstuffworks.com - Roller Coaster Roller Coaster Stimulation

PHET Stimulation: Roller Coaster Stimulation In the PHET Skateboard Stimulation, choose Playground. Although it is a skateboard, the physics is still a good demonstration of Roller Coaster. Customize your own Skate Park/Roller Coaster in it. Be sure to observe the energy transformations.
