Presentation transcript:

Bellringer (1/18/12) 1.  Write each sentence, adding commas where necessary.  2.  Then write the rule from your notes next to each.  1.  In 2005 175 students graduate. 2.  Before leaving the soldiers demolished the fort. 3.  Who that woman is is none of your business.   4. Shelley having drowned Byron presided over the funeral ceremonies on the beach. 5.  She stepped around the white concrete and grass.

Commas with Coordinate Adjectives Coordinate adjectives are two or more adjectives that describe the same noun equally. They need to be separated with a comma. For example: A cool, windy night. You can put “and” between them or reverse the order, and the phrase still makes sense.

Commas with Coordinate Adjectives If the adjectives (1) can not be reversed and (2) don’t sound right with “and,” they are not coordinate adjectives and don’t need a comma. For example: I just bought two used bookcases.

Practice Write the sentences, putting commas where needed. Write a C if the sentence is correct. 1. The sweet fragrant odor of the flowers filled the room. 2. It was a warm moist spot in the garden. 3. The three red balls sat in the corner. 4. There were two shiny black limousines parked outside. 5. She purchased some comfortable inexpensive shoes. 6. We looked forwarded to the exciting fun-filled trip. 7. The ugly heavy machine blocked the aisle. 8. Two yellow and black butterflies perched on the rail.
