Communicating Ideas Design ideas can be communicated in different ways. Method of communication will depend on which stage the design work is at and who.
This graphic represents how the design process can be chaotic at the beginning but as you work through the process it starts to get focus and direction.

Engineering Design and Development - EDD Why EVERY School Should Have This Course! Ashley Gregory, EDD Master Teacher, Holt High School, Wentzville, MO Aaron Parsons, EDD Master Teacher, Boulder Creek High School, Phoenix, Arizona

EDD – What Is It? Teamwork Research Design Development Problem Solving Communication Real Life!

TEAMWORK Students work on a design team for the entire year. This process helps simulate a real- world workplace experience. How students choose their teams is VERY important!

RESEARCH Students choose a problem that they could solve by creating an innovative product or process. This stage requires a lot of research as students try to justify and validate not only their problem selection, but their preliminary design ideas.

DESIGN Students come up with their designs through a series of sketches, 3D Modeling, and building a mock-up.

DEVELOPMENT Students present their design ideas in order to get feedback on how they should proceed. Students use this information to refine their designs.

PROBLEM SOLVING Students learn how to be good problem solvers through this process. Even more important than solving a problem is being able to explain the process behind their decision- making.

COMMUNICATION The most beneficial aspect of this course is the communication piece, as well as seeing a project through completion: Group Instructor, other administrators Mentors Peers Target Market Panel of Experts Other Clubs

COURSE OUTLINE FIRST SEMESTER: Element A – Problem Identification and Justification Element B – Identification and Analysis of Prior Solution Attempts Element C – Presentation and Justification of Design Solution Requirements Element D – Design Concepts Generation, Analysis, and Selection Element E – Application of STEM Practices and Principles SECOND SEMESTER Element F – Consideration of Design Viability Element G – Creation of a Testable Prototype Element H – Prototype Testing and Data Collection Plan Element I – Data Results and Testing Analysis Elements J-L – Evaluation and Reflection on the Design Process Elements M-N – Presentation of the Design Process
