Global Media Some implications

Technology, the U.S. & the world Technology makes it possible to experience other cultures. But, our attitudes and habits are not keeping pace with the new technology. Technological illiteracy. The “digital divide.” Provincialism. Colonialism.

Nationalism We fail to recognize the impact of world events on our society and lives We fail to recognize the source of our national problems may be international Can we understand or accurately interpret world events?

Instantaneous News What is the impact? Media color our perception of events. The number of messages has increased exponentially. Technical complexity and the skills have become more specialized.

International News Media An outgrowth of Western Media Does it lead to Media Imperialism? The third world relies on the West to find out about themselves and their neighbors Reporting is as important as the event.

Gathering International News The U.S. news agencies Associated Press United Press International CNN The other networks

Gathering International News International agencies Reuters Agence France Press Sky ITAR-TASS XINHUA Deutsche Welle

Gathering International News Journalism of Exception The U.S. only reports on events that are “exceptional” – or not normal We react to unusual events as we do here in the U.S. We do not report or care about “normal” events

Gathering International News The U.S. news agencies do not normally station reporters in foreign countries We go in when a sensational event occurs Many foreign agencies maintain correspondents in foreign countries permanently They understand the culture, the politics and the social structure – the context of the events

The dilemma of terrorism The acts are perpetrated to garner media attention Does TV coverage encourage terrorism? “…terrorists are the super-entertainers…”

“The ability to communicate with itself is transforming the African continent.”

Questions. Will technological innovation only increase the power of the west? Where does technology come from for the “have nots?” Will improved communication promote growth and development or new forms of dependence?
