Being Successful is centred around … Above all else, success in the 6th form depends on all three working hard and working together for the best interests of the student. What are we looking at tonight? This evening we will look at the following How does a current 6th former describe student life? How does one meet the expectations of 6th form? Top 10 tips for supporting for supporting your child (PiXl) How can we prepare students for more difficult qualifications?

How do we meet expectations in the 6th form? The Charter Attend all lessons punctually and have a growth mind-set Commit to being an outstanding role model   Effectively manage relationships in a mature, respectful and intelligent manner. Demonstrate a proactive approach   Accept responsibility for your own learning   Consistently maintain an acceptable attitude to learning grade Good or better (1 or 2) for all my subjects.   Maintain an attendance rate of at least 96% and accept that should my attendance drop, appropriate intervention will be implemented by the school. To dress smartly and meet the Sixth Form dress code and always wear your student ID badge. Look after the 6th form block Take personal responsibility to regularly check school emails. Attend all compulsory visits and events scheduled in the Sixth Form.

How do we meet expectations in the 6th form? The themes of the charter are… responsibility, attitude, growth mindset

How do we meet expectations in the 6th form? REMINDER The school day starts at 8.40 and all students should be on site by that time. This allows all students to be at their tutor base and seated by 8.45. IF YOU ARRIVE AFTER 8.40 YOU ARE LATE FOR SCHOOL.

Its really easy to link attendance and punctuality to progress!

How do we meet expectations in the 6th form? Attendance 96% is the magic figure, anything below that and we will investigate. 96% = 8 school days missed per year 90% = 19 school days missed per year Arriving 30m late is the equivalent to losing 19 days per year Statistically, missing just 17 days per year will drop you 1 grade

How do we meet expectations in the 6th form? – Tutor Time Tutor time is a time for students to prepare themselves for the day. It will enable tutors to provide advice support and mentoring It will provide an opportunity for academic reading Tutors can support students in developing their growth mindset

Supervised Independent Study & Free Periods – Time Management 5 periods of SIS over the 2 week timetable In classrooms and supervised by teachers. Students must work in absolute SILENCE! Listening to music via headphones is not permitted. If you have a free on your timetable feel free to use the library, or ask Mrs Pasa for a free classroom. MOBILE USE IS NOT PERMITTED in either location!

Clear Expectations – Clear policy Mr Dollery and I will be manning the 6th form centre on Friday afternoons to support any students who haven’t made the following Late to tutor time twice in one week = 30m catch up clinic Missed a tutor time = 1h Catch up clinic Miss an SIS = 1h Catch up clinic Miss 3 SIS in one week = 2h Catch up clinic Late for 2 SIS in one week = 30m Catch up clinic We want to give students some freedom to develop their time management skills but we also recognise students won’t develop this over night.

What should students be doing in supervised study? Practical Advice Download the Specifications for all your subjects Regularly evaluate your learning by using a MyPLC Download exam questions & Mark Schemes. Read ahead Read your notes Practice answering past exam questions. Set yourself high but realistic goals Working on a growth mindset

Top 10 tips to support your child

How can you help your child and prepare them to perform? Being a role model Help them set goals Keep them active Healthy eating Time out Sleep patterns Unplugging Staying cool & calm Belief Be supportive Each day you can support your child to make choices which can impact how they perform during the next two years

1. Being a role model Set a good example by modelling the behaviour you want your child to adopt… Planning for the week Eating healthily and well Keeping hydrated Leading an active life Staying calm Being organised Good sleep habits

2. Goal Setting Encourage them to keep a goal planner visible – e.g. printed and displayed on their bedroom wall Help focus them and talk to them about their goals regularly Give positive reinforcement Connect with them about ‘why’ and ‘what’ they want to achieve

3. Keeping Active Encourage them to keep active on a daily basis Carry out exercise in manageable chunks e.g. 3 x 20 min sessions throughout the day Plan to do active things together on a weekend Go out for a walk together and get some fresh air Build exercise into a weekly plan After exercise your brain functions well, so encourage a revision session afterwards

4. Healthy Eating Plan your family meals for the week – breakfast, snacks, lunches and evening meals Avoid high sugary and fatty foods or drinks Aim to eat clean, fresh and healthy foods Have a couple or ‘treat’ meals / or meals out per week Use the Mark Lloyd recipes and meal planner as guidance Encourage them to eat breakfast everyday Hydration is key to brain functioning so make sure your child carries a bottle of water with them

Whole Grains / Brown rice Eating the right food and drink can energise your system, improve alertness and sustain your child through a demanding 2 years 4. Healthy Eating A BALANCING ACT Keep your sugar levels under control. UP THE B’S & OMEGA 3’S B vitamins are directly involved in creating energy at a cellular level & will give you an energy boost Green vegetables Asparagus / Spinach Broccoli Yoghurt Chicken / Salmon Whole Grains / Brown rice Almonds / Pecans Eggs MIGHTY MAGNESIUM Magnesium is involved in over 1000 enzymatic reactions in the body. It's vitally important in providing our cells with energy Green vegetables Nuts Pulses Fish Bananas

5. Time Out Encourage them to build in opportunities to take some time out every week, away from study. For example: Going out for food Seeing friends Having a bath Listening to music Reading a book Doing a hobby Going shopping Going to the cinema

6.Sleep Patterns Young people need between 8 – 9 hours sleep per night Help your child create a relaxing evening routine Make sure they don’t eat too late at night Avoid giving them caffeine or sugary drinks late at night Encourage them to switch off from social media / technology at least an hour before bedtime

7. Unplugging Encourage them to unplug from technology everyday Help them switch off from technology 1 hr before going to sleep Support your child to appreciate the world around them rather than being governed by their phone Make sure they put their phone away, & on silent, while they are concentrating on tasks / revision / homework Choose some time each day/week to switch off and unplug from technology with them

8. Staying Cool & Calm Set a good example by staying calm yourself Help them plan out coping strategies to deal with their stress Give them positive distractions away from studying Help them understand its best to focus on controlling the controllables Promote a balance of their academic studies & other activities during the week

9. Belief Give them positive reinforcement Boost their confidence daily Celebrate any successes and reward them e.g. if they have achieved their mini-goals Try not to set your expectations too high Show them how proud of them you are Highlight things to make them feel good Give them the belief in themselves to help them achieve

10. Be Supportive Be a good listener Encourage them to take breaks in between revision Show some understanding of what they are going through Help them deal with their emotions & feelings Offer caring advice Just be there for them!

How can we prepare students for more difficult qualifications? There has been a lot in the news about A Levels and Level 3 BTEC’s getting harder. But how????

But what if I were to say… That your IQ was not the most important thing in determining success and students can choose the grades they want

An example of growth mindset He failed to reach the required standard in the general part of his school examination But he grew, he showed determination, stamina and grit!

How do will we help students embrace a growth mindset? So clearly grit and growth mindset are hugely valuable if students buy into them. But changing a mind set with out support is actually very difficult. So, we will help by breaking down the components of a growth mindset and structure them in the following way…
