Utility Industry Math Boot Camp Scoring 80% on Common Fractions Expresses as Decimals and Percents Quiz #2 means getting at least 14 questions right; getting no more than 3 wrong or blank.

Utility Industry Math Boot Camp The times tables highlighted in yellow are already memorized; e.g., when you memorize 1 x 2 you’ve also memorized 2 x 1. The times tables in the black cells [perfect squares] are very important; they’re so important… [Tell students to look at the back page.]

Utility Industry Math Boot Camp …they they’re listed on the back. Tell students that they must memorize all high-lighted perfect squares and square roots. Break it down for them so the task doesn’t seem that formidable. 1 – 12 they’ll have as a consequence of memorizing their times tables. Ask them why 132 (169) and 142 (196) will be easy to remember. Show them the “trick” for squaring all numbers that end in “5.” [152: Go to first number—which is 1. Ask: if you’re counting, what comes after 1? 2, right? What’s 1 x 2? 2, right?. Write 2 and then write 25 after the 2: 152 = 225. Then do 252: Go to first number—which is 2. Ask: if you’re counting, what comes after 2? 3, right? What’s 2 x 3? 6, right?. Write 6 and then write 25 after the 6: 252 = 625.] Demonstrate 352 and 452. Finally, remind them that since rulers and measuring tapes are divided into sixteenths, it will be very useful for them to have memorized 162=256.

Utility Industry Math Boot Camp Tell your students that that the answer for 85% to 90% of such questions on tests (What is this fraction expressed as a decimal? What is this decimal expressed as a percent? Etc.) will come from this table.
