The 41st Annual Bayou Classic November 24-30, 2014
Mission The Bayou Classic provides scholarship dollars to Southern University System and Grambling State University athletic departments. The Bayou Classic also includes and acknowledges other curriculum fields of study including STEM, Nursing, Technology, Law, Agriculture & Music for scholarship dollars. The Bayou Classic creates internships and hiring opportunities with global companies for both universities. The Bayou Classic provides opportunities for students to attend one of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
History It started out as a simple football game between two rival schools and now, 40 years later, it has morphed into something much larger. The Bayou Classic is now six days of events featuring a parade, fan festival, a golf tournament, empowerment seminars, a battle of the bands and much more, all of which culminates with a football matchup between the Jaguars of Southern University and the Tigers of Grambling State University. The Bayou Classic is played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome annually on the Saturday following Thanksgiving with kick-off at 1:30 pm CST. The 41st Annual Bayou Classic will break the tied winning record of 20 wins each between both Southern and Grambling. The rivalry between the two schools dates back to 1974, when the first Bayou Classic was held in New Orleans’ Tulane Stadium. Since then, tens of thousands of fans have gathered not only for the game, but also for what is now a full week of festivities in New Orleans. One of the entertainment highlights of the lead-up to the big game is provided by the two schools’ marching bands. The Southern “Human Jukebox” and the Grambling “Marching Tigers” will again compete in a “Battle of the Bands” event held the night before the game in the superdome. Those same two marching bands will participate in the Fourth Annual Bayou Classic Thanksgiving Day Parade, from the Superdome to the French Market. The parade will showcase floats, marching bands, military units, alumni groups and motorized units.
