Super Storm Sandy: The Wake up Call Governor Corbett received request to support NJ’s operation with the establishment of shelters DHS was not Prepared Resources were taxed across the region No contingency plan was in place DHS was not a supportive partner the planning process DHS failed to take Initiative! 9/17/2018

DHS is looking at Contingency Planning What were doing DHS is looking at Contingency Planning Establish State Managed Shelter teams that Integrate into the current system Train DHS shelter team (4) for a 2,000 person shelter NIMS and ICS Red Cross Shelter Fundamentals and Shelter Management Build capacity at the local level Support during smaller events Work with other state agencies for the staffing and supporting roles, (DOH with medical care) Looking at NGOs to support other support operations Working with Universities to train students for support staffing 9/17/2018
