Sabbatical Program Awards Cal Wellness Sabbatical Program Awards created in 2003 Modeled after the Durfee Foundation’s sabbatical program for nonprofit leaders in Los Angeles County Differs from traditional sabbatical programs True respite, no contact with work Organizations receive capacity building support Improve the long-term effectiveness and sustainability of health service nonprofits by providing their executives with the rest and rejuvenation they need to continue to direct their organizations' mission.

Overview of application process The Sabbatical Program Award grant is provided to the organization and covers: Salary & benefits of the executive director during time away Capacity building support to the organization Multi-phase application process Diverse applicant pool Sabbatical Program awardees participate in an orientation, conference and awards ceremony prior to their time away

Key ELIGIBILITY criteria Leaders of organizations that add significant value to their communities and the field. Organizations must address issues that positively impact the health and well-being of Californians. Executive Director Paid, full-time employee 6+ consecutive years at organization

Key Eligibility criteria Health-related organizations making a difference for clients and community Financially stable Able to maintain operations in absence of executive director Strong management Seasoned and skilled executive directors

Three major points to consider: Why a sabbatical now? Three major points to consider: How will the organization operate in the absence of the executive director? Who will be in charge? What might be different? What will help your organization operate and grow during the sabbatical period? How will you, as executive director, use this few months off to take care of yourself and your personal needs and interests?

Application materials Three references One board member Elected officials are discouraged Reference interviews will take place between mid-May and late June Budget = $40,000 grant award Up to $30,000 can be used towards executive director’s salary/benefits $10,000 is to support capacity building of the organization Organizational Chart
