CASLLS Cottage Acquisition Scales of Language, Listening, and Speech -Criterion referenced scales based on typical child development of speech, language, and listening skills -Developed by Sunshine Cottage in San Antonio for use with Deaf and hard of hearing students -Five color-coded scales: Pre-Verbal, Pre-Sentence, Simple Sentence, Complex Sentence, and Speech -Tracks behaviors typically seen from 0 months to 8 years of age

Developing the Snapshot 5 scales were overwhelming when presented to parents or district representatives Percentages can be hard to interpret or “visualize” Understanding the extent of a student’s language delay was difficult when viewing the full set of scales Developing lesson plans, teacher improvement goals and CASLLS targets for a group or class was overwhelming There was a need for an “at a glance” explanation for the CASLLS during conferences, ARDs, and other meetings

CASLLS Snapshot

Student Over Time

Student’s Average Delay

Student’s Average Progress

Class Progress

Using the Snapshot Determine language gap across specific language targets Share the Snapshot with district representatives and parents Track progress over time Determine group or class- wide weaknesses in order to develop target lessons and interventions Determine student groupings for lessons Determine typical growth rate for planning ARD goals and objectives
