Presentation transcript:

In-text (parenthetical) citations and works cited page. Purpose: to accurately and appropriately cite sources according to MLA standards.

Citing Sources Each group is going to Google and research specific topics related to Works Cited Pages and then report your group’s findings to the class. Please take notes in your writer’s notebook and share your answers on the white board. Formatting (2 groups) Placement of works cited in paper Source Entry information (what goes in an entry?) Ordering of sourcing in the works cited Why works cited pages are necessary? Purpose

Purpose: To write a multi-paragraph essay that establishes a problem with Neshaminy’s course offerings and provides a reasonable solution, proven through credible and ample research. Done: Create a defensible claim. Learn methods for researching a single topic using various resources. Blend quotations properly into the essay. Understand how to adequately construct an argument and support it with credible and reliable research. Recognize the difference between plagiarism and paraphrasing. Address counterarguments and rebuttals. Write multiple drafts of the essay (pre-write, drafting, revision and editing). Correctly cite a source and quotations used in research. Create a research paper with a proper Works Cited page.

Works Cited Page Core elements are those basic pieces of information that should be common to all sources, from books to articles, from lectures to tweets. The MLA core elements are as follows: Author. Title of source. Title of container, Other contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication date, Location. Let’s Review Grammar and sentence review handout due Friday. Come get the handout if you were absent yesterday. Clean copy of rough draft due Wednesday in class. You need it to be printed out. Email me before homeroom tomorrow if you want a copy of it for class (if you don’t have a printer). You should have your draft typed with the works cited page finished. Make sure to highlight your revisions. Final draft of essay due Sunday night at 11:59pm in Turnitin.com. I will collect the rough draft and rubric on Monday in class. I need those two things to grade your essay.

Create a research paper with a proper Works Cited page. Write multiple drafts of the essay (pre-write, drafting, revision and editing). Correctly cite a source and quotations used in research.

Why cite? To avoid plagiarism. To establish credibility (that you are citing people who are experts in the field, respected research, etc.). To give the reader a way to check your sources to read further. To avoid the dismissal of your argument because of lack of sources/research. To get your work published (if that was your goal).

Basic rules of citation The goal of the in-text citation are brevity and clarity, guiding the reader as unobtrusively as possible to the corresponding entry in the works-cited list. Put whatever is first in the works cited page in the parenthesis (to link the reader between the quotation in the text and your works cited page.

What pattern do you notice in the following examples? According to Naomi Baron, reading is “just half of literacy. The other half is writing” (194). Following that, Mark Fumeberg, writer for the Washington Post, commented that “ignoring climate change would certainly not solve it” (18). In response to the president’s remarks, neuroscience doctor and researcher, Jane Smith, wrote in her column that “obesity is again on the rise in America and will continue to be a problem, unless parents make changes.”

What pattern do you notice in the following examples? Because history has a place in all of our lives, ”the statue, depicting a German marine holding a rifle in his hands and standing guard over a dying comrade, has stood undisturbed for decades in the most prominent spot…on Namibia’s coast” (Onishi). Unbelievably, “[the statue] has survived the end of colonial rule in this corner of southern Africa, the subsequent occupation by apartheid South Africa, independence in 1990 and the present government by the black majority” (Onishi).

What pattern do you notice in the following sentences? Because of recent corruption, “South Korean prosecutors on Saturday arrested President Park Geun-hye’s culture minister and her former top presidential adviser over allegations that they blacklisted artists critical of the government” (“South Korea Culture”). Not surprisingly, considering the recent spike in violence in the Middle East, “about 50 people were also injured when a bomb exploded at busy vegetable market in Parachinar, Pakistan” (“Pakistan Market Blast”).

What pattern do you notice in the following sentences? Even though mankind has always experienced dangerous weather, “In recent years, large and highly destructive hurricanes, tornadoes and other storms have wreaked havoc across the world. These include storms like Hurricane Katrina and the more recent Typhoon Haiyan, which scientists have labelled ‘superstorms’” (education.seattlepi.com). Because global warming is a world-wide problem that needs scientists working to solve it, “students interested in ecosystems can choose from a variety of global ecosystems -- from very small and regional to large and continental -- to assess how global climate change will impact a given ecosystem” (education.seattlepi.com).

What do you notice about the following sentences? Samuel Johnson admitted the Edmund Burke was an “extrodinary man” (qtd. In Boswell 2). Mark Hooger described how Burke “contributed so much to the field of literature” (qtd. In Boswell 5). In response to the comments posted in the last journal article, Thomas Doe explained that “Burke should be respected but criticized for some of his baseless comments about literature” (qtd. In Boswell 17).
