AIM: How do we describe and graph motion and calculate speed and velocity? OBJ: Given notes and activity sheet SWBAT describe and graph motion and calculate speed and velocity with 70% accuracy DN: Distribute Motion, Forces, Energy Textbooks Watch video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1yH362x8p0 ACT: Introduction to Motion, Speed/Velocity (notes) Text, read p.6-15, Work on Describing & Measuring Motion Packet Thursday HW: Study for Minerals & Rocks Exam, tomorrow, Friday, 3/20. Friday HW: Complete Describing & Measuring Motion Packet.

Describing & Measuring Motion Notes Motion: if your distance from another object (place) is changing. Reference point: is a place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion. An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point.

Reference point

Describing & Measuring Motion Notes Relative Motion: involves your aunts, uncles, cousins (lol; just kidding). Are you moving depends on your reference point? Reference point: your chair Moving? No Reference point: Sun Moving? Yes; moving very fast (30 km/s)

Relative Motion

Describing & Measuring Motion Notes Measuring Distance Meter (m) = unit of length Centimenter (cm) = 1/100 meter Millimeter (mm) = 1/1000 meter Kilometer (km) = 1000 meters

1 mile = 1.6 km 1 mile

Describing & Measuring Motion Notes Calculating Speed Speed = distance (m) (km) (cm) time (s) (hr) (s) Average Speed: when moving objects are not constant (changing speed). To calculate Average Speed = total distance total time

Describing & Measuring Motion Notes Describing Velocity velocity = speed + direction Graphing Motion Slope = steepness of the line; steeper = faster speed; gentle = slower Horizontal line = object stopped Constant slope = constant speed Slope (speed) = distance time change in slope = change in speed.

Describing & Measuring Motion Notes slow, steady speed stopped
