Gaming: 2-D to 3-D The Legend Of Zelda

An Adventure Begins The Legend of Zelda was a game designed by Shigero Miyamoto and published by Nintendo in 1986. It is based off of Miyamoto’s adventurous childhood. It was originally made in 2-D on the NES. It is one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises.

The Sequel In 1988 (not even a year after the first Legend of Zelda game was released) Miyamoto and Nintendo released the only ever Legend of Zelda sequel. Every other game is a prequel according to the Legend of Zelda timeline. Zelda II The Adventure of Link completely threw away the adventure feel of the original Zelda and becoming a sidescroller. Basically instead of being able to travel up and down you could only go to the right or sometimes left.

Back to the Roots The third installment of The Legend of Zelda series was called The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, it went back to its roots of the first game and ditched the side-scrolling aspect. It was released in 1991 for the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). It is still considered to be one of the best games in the franchise.

Link’s Awakening Link’s Awakening is one of the few games in the series that doesn’t take place in Hyrule or feature the triforce relic or even Princess Zelda. Link’s awakening was the first Legend of Zelda game for a handheld device. It was released in 1993.

3-D In 1998 Nintendo released the first 3-D game of the series, The Ocarina of Time!! It was released for the N64 and now has ports/remakes on numerous Nintendo consoles. It is one of the highest rated reviewed games ever.

Majora’s Mask The sequel to the hit Ocarina of Time, was released in 2000 on the N64. The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask was considered to be one of the draker games in the series but was loved for it’s graphics and unique plot.
