HS2 will be the new backbone of Britain’s rail network and directly connect 8 out of 10 of Britain’s biggest cities and their regions This is WHY HS2 will provide a brand new high speed, dedicated passenger network. It will not only offer a new route between the north and south of the country; It will also release capacity on existing lines, which will reduce overcrowding on commuter routes in and out of our biggest cities. HS2 will be delivered in three phases, connecting Birmingham to London from 2026; known as Phase One. Crewe will be on the high speed network from 2027; Phase 2a. And from 2033, a Y-shaped route to Manchester in the West and Sheffield and Leeds in the East will be completed. Phase 2b. ***** ***** ***** Journey times will be transformed. When Phase One opens, it will take just 45 minutes to go between Birmingham and London – compared to 82 minutes today. Phase Two will cut the travel time between Manchester and London in half. And it will be 50 minutes quicker between London and Leeds. HS2 is a £55 billion investment and a 16 year construction programme. The scale and duration allow us to make wide-spread and long-lasting changes in our country. It is already changing the perceptions and ambitions of the next generation. Local authorities and businesses are planning out how to make best use of the opportunities HS2 will create. It’s no coincidence HSBC is relocating its retail banking headquarters to Birmingham. And Burberry is opening a factory near the proposed HS2 station in Leeds. We can see it for ourselves, HS2 is already Changing Britain. Crewe

3% EDI can be the difference maker The difference between winning a contract and coming second place can be as little as 3% KEY MESSAGE: Sustainability is a difference maker. Although over 75% of the evaluation criteria relates to technical requirements over 14% of marks relate to sustainability areas. Those organisations that take their time to respond effectively will score more. Those who ignore the Sustainability requirements (which include EDI as shown on the diagram) will not win business with HS2. Recent Procurement exercises show the difference between the company that wins the tender and 2nd place can be as little as 4% Sustainability matters to HS2, if your performance on these areas is poor regardless of how well you demonstrate your technical ability ….they could be the deal breaker. & that’s why Diversity Matters at HS2 and why it must matter to you …..

We’re creating new and innovative tools to support our supply chain This is cool stuff… Screen shot of demographic tool – smart recruiting, community engagement and design Useful for recruitment for suppliers Useful for understanding the makeup of communities and therefore how we communicate with them – particularly in rural areas with worse broadband access Helps anyone who is working with or for hs2 to make smart decisions around planning We also provide community engagement data bases, JD templates, EDI games, infographic maps and Demographic databases plus on-going support via the HS2 EDI team.

We’ve just had our first Tier 1 supplier achieve the national equality standard – Arup and others have been influenced to achieve EDI accreditation such as Green Park acheiveing a AAA accessible website as a result of HS2 inclusive procurement requirements And another is just about to achieve web accessibility accreditation for their online recruitment portals – LM JV

We set out stringent requirements in the contracts and works information. And we ask them of ourselves as well as our suppliers. We’re eating our own dog food I probably said that exact phrase in this meeting when I was briefing my colleagues on our approach to EDI So let me leave you with some evidence that our approach is working so far….. HS2 has nearly doubled our spend with diverse suppliers and SME’s in our corporate procurement from £4.8 million to £8.8 million HS2 has achieved web accessibility accreditation, Disability Confident and now 5 EDI awards in the last 18 months for our EDI work Our strategic contracts such as EDP, PSC are outperforming industry averages for a diverse workforce Around 10% of spending on PSC contracts has been with diverse suppliers
