WHISPER POWER “ The new way of yachting life” BMEA Annual Conference 2010

Presentation Team Mr. Ruud Bosman, Technical Director of WhisperPower - Responsibilities include: Research & development Product &Concept Design QA Joined WhisperPower in 1998 (at that time Mastervolt Whisper Gensets BV) 25 Years of successful track records in building and leading power systems companies 3

Presentation Team Mr. David Melville, area manager UK and Ireland for WhisperPower. - Responsibilities include: - Support of sales network - System design marine/ mobile/ off-grid - Marketing execution in the area Joined WhisperPower Spring 2010 Over 30 years of experience in the field of independent electrical power systems 4

Our presentation today: I Introduction WhisperPower/ Hybrid Power II A new way to a different yachting experience: our vision and contribution III Products and systems IV Greener and cleaner, Hybrid technology 5

Introduction WhisperPower Founded July 2007 by Roel ter Heide, MD of Victron Energy (1983), founder of Mastervolt (1991), Mastervolt Gensets BV (1998). The Sun Factory (2000), and Hybrid Power Systems (2010). WhisperPower is the spin - off from the Generator division of Mastervolt which was founded in 1998 14 Mio EUR sales in the first 18 months Growth ambition: 20 Mio sales in 2015 6

Introduction WhisperPower Over 10.000 diesel generators sold since 1998 From 3 kVA – 25 kVA, low and high rpm System approach – all installation components from one supplier Various markets: marine, mobile, domestic, defence Since 1st July direct involvement in global marine markets – Mastervolt stops selling fixed rpm gensets 7

Anticipating market trends Over the past 20 years boat sizes increased Electrical: From 12 V battery based systems to high kVA 230 V/50 Hz AC systems Technical installations became more and more complicated in order to meet customer need for comfort: entertainment, comfort during mooring, anchorage and navigation With size, boat prices increased substantially 8

Anticipating market trends Power systems have grown in kW size over the years Price/ performance /size / weight / audible noise level and “ silent time” critical Interfacing of components with Bus systems System design in such a way shore power can be used in an optimal way Global infra structure to support the systems 9

Demand in the market is changing Marine industry has challenges: Boat owners have higher demand More adequate service, higher quality, better infrastructure (marinas), more cost effective approach/ lower prices Environmental: audible noise, emissions, exhaust gasses, soot, more efficient hull design, building materials must be durable, etc. “ Making boating more fun” – but keeping new norms and values in mind 10

The new way of yachting experience Yachts are used more and more as floating hotels Owners want to navigate the vessel with family – preferably without crew All comfort from home has to be available Short and long range use Systems have to work properly, silently and clean We see new initiatives: navette style/ house boats, steel yachts for European waterways 11

“Blue hull, green soul” Also in the Super Yacht industry: trends are Greener and Cleaner. Hull design, building material wood FSC approved, low emission engines, exhaust filters for generators etc. Latest launch: Azimut Magellano 50 Ft (Hull design by Bill Dixon, exterior Cor de Rover) Less fuel consumption, optional Hybrid 2 x 50 kW propulsion, low emission main engines, etc. 12

WhisperPower’s contribution We still need diesel power for propulsion and power – solar/ wind/ fuel cell power is not realistic now We can improve the energy balance by using the generated energy in a better way Our new Genverter/ GPX hybrid generator and our new Hybrid systems are good examples of how we can improve 13

More integration HYBRID GENERATOR (5 KVA) COMBINING: Sine wave inverter (for silent AC power) Shore “booster” – power support at low A Diesel generator (VST = Variable speed) Source selection: AC power/ Shore/ genset/inverter Shore connection  battery charging 14

Hybrid Generator (5 kVA) Sine wave inverter provides AC power from 24VDC, inverter power 2kW Continuous, 4kW peak Permanent Magnet alternator integrated with fly wheel: compact and high efficient Intelligent power management system controls: variable engine speed Switch mode battery charger with 3-stage charge characteristic 1-Cylinder WhisperPower diesel engine 15

Block diagram AC Load G Battery 16 Diesel Internal Combustion Engine Power Electronic Converter Permanent Magnet Generator Transfer Switch G Battery 16

INNOVATIONS Variable Speed technology (VST) Permanent magnet technology Flywheel alternator Power electronics /inverter technology Microprocessor control and power management Oil cooled engine Energy storage: The SERVICE BATTERY is the key element of an on-board system. 17

Hybrid Generator Advantages Lower fuel consumption Lower CO2 emissions Lower exhaust emissions Silent mode Lower noise when running Shorter running time Longer lifetime High peak power Smaller dimensions 18

Hybrid Generator (5 kVA) Available in 2011 as Mastervolt GPX 5 kVA/ for global marine markets, As GENVERTER 5i for global non-marine markets through WhisperPower distribution. 19

Hybrid Power and Propulsion Further integration  cost effective reduction of components and longer “ silent” time with reduced generator running hours Lower kVA rating of generator  batteries will provide surge power (peak shaving) Variable periods of “silent navigation” Battery operates vital functions: maneuvering, hydraulics etc. More freedom of interior design Less environmental pollution Access to natural parks 20

Hybrid Power and Propulsion Early 2012 Rainbow will be launched and rigged, after which there will be an extensive training period for crew and racing crew. In June 2012 at the J class event at Falmouth and Cowes, Rainbow JH2 will be able to compete against her sister ships for the first time. 23

Hybrid Power and Propulsion 24

Hybrid Power and Propulsion System for J – Class vessels: Scania 450 Hp with 50 kW fly-wheel generator/motor (electrical navigation and shaft alternator/ max 10 kW under sail) 2 - 3 hours of electrical – zero emission – navigation Zero-emission maneuvering 25

ADVANTAGES OF THIS SYSTEM Zero- emission navigation for several hours No generator(s) needed during sailing Over 16 hours of silent mode, no generators even when Aircon is on Variable speed generator starts when batteries require recharge or high loads are switched on Genverter generator will adapt RPM to load pattern – low noise level at low rpm Regaining energy when sailing 31

Other system variations Full hybrid (serial configuration) Diesel- electric with battery mode Optimal freedom when configuring the interior Diesel (s) are used for propulsion AND power generation Peak shaving  batteries 32

Capital investment for such systems At least 2 x times traditional price level But much smarter functionality  silent mode “ hotel periods” and zero emission navigation Shore power amperage not a real issue / power support / peak shaving from the battery Strong reduction of wear and tear/ maintenance costs The real “Power of Green” 33
