Maths Information Evening Maths In Acorns

End of year expectations Count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20 Place numbers 1 to 20 in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number Using quantities and objects, add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer Solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing Use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems Recognise, create and describe patterns Explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them End of year expectations

Maths in Acorns Focussed maths lessons twice a week Daily Count Maths activities to access in Independent learning Maths everywhere – Outside, at the Snack table, in the water tray… Adults will comment on children’s learning – How many dollies/cars have you got? What if we add one more, take one away… What shape have you made…what do you think? Why? Recording in books (number writing) Maths in Acorns

Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract The principle of the CPA approach is that for children to have a true understanding of a mathematical concept there are three phases they need to master: concrete, pictorial and abstract. White Rose Scheme of work Exploring – Playing with numbers, exploring weight, capacity, measure, counters, dice Reasoning – Asking why and how, talking about what they have found Problem solving – How can I make 5? A shape with 3 corners? Fluency – Quick mental recall! Coming to an answer quickly and without in depth thinking. This is very important and will form the foundations of a child’s mathematical knowledge. E.G 3+3, 4+4, Number bonds to ten, daily count, finding numbers in different ways White Rose Scheme of work

The 2014 National Curriculum is explicit in articulating the importance of children using the correct mathematical language as a central part of their learning. E.g Think of as many words meaning ‘+‘ symbol as possible in 15 seconds. What is the largest number you can make with these cards? Explain your answer. Why? Why not? What if? Language & Reasoning

How you can support at home Measuring – cooking and following instructions, measure yourself with a height chart, use a tape measure Time – Days of the week, months of the year, how long until? Analogue/digital, dates, keep a calendar Picnic or Party Maths – Preparing food for a group of people is a real problem solving opportunity, how many cups can we fill with one jug, how many pieces of pizza, a great opportunity to use language like half, quarter, double. Shopping games – set up a mini supermarket at home, using real money, giving change and budgeting! Number Games – Board games, snakes and ladders, dominoes, snap doubles, dice games, play with a calculator. Shapes – Shopping shape sort – find 3d shapes in the supermarket, 2d shape pictures and patterns, drawing shapes. How you can support at home

A traditional wall calendar-Calendars help with counting days, spotting number patterns Board games that involve dice or spinners-helps with counting and the idea of chance A pack of playing cards- Card games can be adapted in many ways to learn about number bonds, chance, adding and subtracting A calculator- A basic calculator will help with maths homework when required, there are also many calculator games you can play, too. Measuring Jug-Your child will use them in school, but seeing them used in real life is invaluable. A tape measure and a ruler- Let your child help when measuring up for furniture, curtains etc Fridge magnets with numbers on- can be used for a little practice of written methods Indoor/outdoor Thermometer Dried beans, Macaroni or smarties for counting and estimating. Props around the house
