IBCT Role in WAS/CAM IBCT The IBCT is the Army’s Lightest BCT Light /Airborne/Air Assault Requires Less logistic and strategic support than other BCTs Theater-Wide reach Organic: AT;MI; ART; SIG; ENG; RECON; and Sustainment elements Optimized for operations in close terrain: Swamps; woods; Hilly; Mountains and densely populated area. Reconnaissance Squadron - HHT -2 Mounted Troops -Armored Wheeled Vehicle -1 Dismounted IBCT FSC MI HHC HHT BSTB 395 799 398 3457 688 HQ 180 HHB 309 WPNS DSMTD PAGE B-1 PAGE B-29 PAGE B-22 PAGE B-16 PAGE B-5 PAGE B-36 BSB

Combined Arms Maneuver IBCT Capabilities Combined Arms Maneuver (-) lack of UAV coverage for all maneuver elements Fundamental Battlefield Calculus/COFM still applies Recon platform for IBCTs need concerted effort to improve (protection vs mobility) CAM must included and account for a joint fight and employment/use of joint assets Human interaction (BOG) is still a critical component Wide Area Security (-) lack of UAV coverage for all maneuver elements Security/fighting -different missions Bypass criteria? Control measures Wide area of responsibility (distance) broader assets to assist in security Dispersed & decentralized nature of WAS creates increased sustainment and mission command challenges How do we translate the WAS construct into a useable form for recon units (graphic control measures, T&P)? The unknown distances inherent in WAS increases the demand for echeloned UAS platforms “Fight for information” may actually be “maneuver for information” Human interaction is still a critical component

Doctrine Terms: WAS, CAM, Screen, Guard, etc. Define Chief of Reconnaissance at the BDE? DCO? SCO? Commander’s Reconnaissance Guidance is appropriate and necessary Transition to CAM requires fundamental understanding of COFMs (automated tool/app)

Organization UAS -OSRVT: 2 Squadron level 1 each troop -Raven/ WASP platoon level - UAV feed encryption– enemy can see what you see Precision weapons Laser designated – all Recon team should have the ability to laze targets. Dismounted Trp should be 3 PLTs vice 2 Define what we want from Recon org – Nine years of misuse

Training Align JFO course to ARFORGEN to increase the JFO qualified Soldiers prior to deployment. Long term- increase density of JTACs in Recon Squadron Simulations can maximize limited training time prior to deployments and enhance “live” or field training time

Leader Development Use of simulations and learning through repetition can accelerate a young leaders’ experience without putting Soldiers at risk through poor decisions
