How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay Using the Framework

If essays make you feel like this: No sweat! This breakdown of the essay writing formula will help you stay organized even under pressure Or even like this:

An essay is a group of paragraphs relating to a main idea. The stance you take on the main idea (i.e. your position or your argument) is called your thesis statement The bing, bang, and bong are your three major points to support your thesis statement They are also a method for organizing your thoughts when you write an essay.

The Breakdown

Paragraph # 1 = Introduction THis opens your essay, introduces the topic, states your bing, bang, and bong, and concludes with your thesis statement. # 2 = first Body Paragraph this is the : your first point to support your thesis statement. # 3 = Second body paragraph this is the : your second point to support your thesis statement. # 4 = Third body paragraph this is the : your third and final point to support your thesis statement. # 5 = Conclusion this is the closing of your essay. It doesn’t include any new ideas - just sums up what you’ve written. It includes re-stating the bing, bang, and bong, and your thesis statement.

your bing, bang, bong your three supports for your thesis statement Introduction Hook - grabs the reader! You could start with a surprising fact, a general comment about the topic, novel, short story, poem, etc. that your essay will be examining your bing, bang, bong your three supports for your thesis statement Thesis statement your position/argument - what you are trying to convince your reader of

Let’s try it! Introduction: Hook: Bing: the vulture eye/obsession with the eye Bang: kills the old man - creeping into his room (the meticulous method with which he does it) Bong: Hearing the beating heart Thesis Statement: The main character in Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” Is on the verge of insanity

The vulture eye -discomfort surrounding the eye - effort behind getting rid of the eye -

The killing of the old man Watching the old man while he sleeps Creepy patience Starts to hear the heartbeat Relief from having the eye go away

Hearing the heartbeat Hearing the dead man’s heart beat Makes him feel guilty...paranoid… Thinks the police are mocking him - laughing/merry-making Blurting of the guilt.

Conclusion: -could come back out a bit to talk about the topic on whole - re state bing, bang, bong, - re-emphasizes your point
