SiloWeigh by The unique tank and vessel level and inventory system Accurate and easy to install Reliable and low in cost 1
Why weigh a tank or vessel? The two overpowering reasons: Never run out of material again Do you know how much it costs to have a concrete plant and its employees idle for just 4 hours while a delivery arrives? Ask an owner/manager – it would pay for the whole system at the very first occurrence Never blow material out of the top Overfilling clogs the filters and the increasing air pressure blows them out, polluting the air and sending a cloud of material over the area. Large fines are common. Again, it would pay for the system at the very first occurrence
The cool, logical reasons Gives accurate inventory at low cost Gives true weight, accuracy of 2%, good enough for inventory Much better accuracy than level sensors, which do not have enough accuracy for inventory Much lower cost than load cells, does not need vessel to be moved for installation Reliable – no moving parts Shows level at a glance plus digital weight display in tons Useful in many different industries Accurate in any climate – hot or cold
What is SiloWeigh? SiloWeigh displays the contents in your tank or vessel. It measures the actual weight to give a true picture of the amount on hand - and it costs little more than a high- end level sensor. SiloWeigh can display the weight of contents in practically any vessel. Examples are: cement, sand, aggregates, flour, grains such as corn, rice, wheat, oats and barley, mineral ores, coal, coke, chemicals, plastics, even liquids and liquefied gases. SiloWeigh uses Silex sensors that are bolted onto each leg to measure the stress and hence the weight in the vessel. Dealer or self-installation. The kit comes with complete instructions, including colour pictures.
What is a Silex Sensor? Basically it is a load cell, but instead of measuring force, it is clamped onto a surface where it measures the extension or compression in the surface It uses metal foil strain gauges, which consist of a pattern of resistive foil printed onto a backing material. These are bonded onto the metal of the sensor They operate on the principle that as the foil is stretched or compressed, the resistance of the foil changes in a defined way These resistance changes are extremely accurate and stable, allowing the result to be displayed digitally as the weight in the vessel
Silex sensors are stable and accurate Both our original weldable gauges (in use for over 10 years) and Silex sensors were compared at our Ontario test site. Conclusion was that Silex is equally accurate and much easier to install. Hundreds of Silex installations have been installed since, in North America and worldwide, with close to 100% success.
Display features Bar graph and digital display reads in tons and tenths Optional 4 setpoint relays for alarm indication Does not need empty vessel for calibration Optional alarm with outputs for lamp and horn, complete with horn silencing button Optional isolated 4-20mA or 0-10 volt analog output can be installed any time Up to 5 indicators in same SiloWeigh cabinet “Oversize” cabinet available for up to 8 indicators Simple programming/calibration Plug-in boards simplify replacement by qualified technician
Why SiloWeigh? Many systems measure level. Accuracy is 10% at best Level and density change as material packs down, reducing the level by a further 10% Weight does not change, even if material bridges in discharge cone or sticks to sides Reliable – no moving parts to jam or break Other weighing systems are difficult to install, too expensive for most applications or give poor results Siloweigh gives better accuracy than level measurement at a similar price and much lower cost than load cells
Where can you install it? Many types of vessel leg: H-section, O-section, square and rectangular section, L-section, S-section, all have been successfully measured Skirted vessels (where the wall of the vessel comes right down to the ground – see at right) are a good application Roll-formed mild steel agricultural vessel legs Any size vessel – legs are designed to match vessel; sensors measure stress and most properly designed legs are adequate, regardless of vessel capacity
WHERE NOT TO INSTALL IT If vessels are on a common structure or share legs, this is a problem. At right, lower frame could not be used but upper vessels have separate legs and can be measured Sensors are matched to structural steel legs. Cannot be used on aluminum or stainless steel legs or structure Impossible to separate the sections in multi-section vessels (although two-compartment vessels can be measured using SiloWeigh.Net’s software) The SiloWeigh Installation and Applications presentation gives lots of practical help with examples. If still unsure, our technical team is ready to help at any time

Applications Explosives storage (Ammonium Nitrate) – SiloWeigh is approved for use in this application – call us for details. Asphalt storage vessels Instead of vertical legs, use cross beams in interconnected frames (consult us) Can be used with regular load cells for better accuracy and pressure transducers for liquid tank measurement First application was for cement vessels in concrete plants. More installed in cement vessels than anything else Grain – corn, wheat, rice etc. Animal feed mills Farm feed metering Breweries Bakeries and food Plastics, chemicals Liquid tanks Mines, refining
Agricultural vessels can also be measured, either with Silex sensors or load cells (as with these ones) for increased accuracy
Use with load cells Can raise vessel and place on “tank mounts” Alternatively, cut base off each leg in turn – MUST ensure safety though! Full load cell accuracy Good for precise measurements such as loadout, batching, rate of usage monitoring Can also replace bar-graph indicators with regular weight indicators, legal for trade if required
Liquid tank level sensing Pressure sensors transmit levels in tanks with high accuracy Can be installed in outlet line by adding a T-piece Sensor transmits level signal but this can be calibrated to read liters, gallons etc. as long as tank is symmetrical – i.e. cylindrical or rectangular about the vertical axis Accuracy is very high – well within 1% Measures mass rather than volume – higher density gives higher pressure Not sensitive to volume changes with temperature for same reason Measure cement powders and liquid admixtures with same system
Liquid tank level sensing Pressure sensors transmit levels in tanks with high accuracy. Standard sensor good to 35 ft Regular sensor can be installed in outlet line by adding a T-piece Sensor transmits level signal but this can be calibrated to read liters, gallons etc. as long as tank is symmetrical – i.e. cylindrical or rectangular about the vertical axis Accuracy is very high – well within 1% Measures mass rather than volume – higher density gives higher pressure Not sensitive to volume changes with temperature for same reason Measure cement powders and liquid admixtures with same system
Immersible, explosionproof sensor Alternative sensor just drops into vessel through hole in top of vessel 50 ft (15 meters) cable is enough for any vessel and standard sensor (15 psi, gives 35 ft depth, max) Junction box supplied with sensor Immersible sensor is rated for combustible liquids, Class I Division 1, groups C and D (petrochemicals) when used with Intrinsic Safety Barrier Meets all worldwide standards for “Hazardous Locations”
Intrinsic Safety Barrier Reduces current to a value that cannot produce a spark Isolates the sensor circuit so that, even with a short circuit to a power line, no spark can be produced Easy to install, does not require a heavy ground as in some other systems First barrier is mounted in a box Up to 8 barriers can be mounted in the same box Barriers allow regular wiring and junction boxes to be used in hazardous area Barrier Safe area Hazardous area
Mix solid and liquid vessels Bar-Graph indicators for Silex sensors and for Liquid Sensors are identical except for input module, so they can be mixed in the same cabinet Silex sensors need an excitation supply while Liquid Sensors do not Can add liquid sensors and displays to a Silex sensor system but cannot do the reverse, since liquid sensor display unit does not have the excitation supply Liquid sensors with lower or higher sensing range are available on special order, to suit any tank size
Non-linear tanks “Tiger” bar-graph indicator is available to handle special cases Typical application is horizontal cylindrical tank. Here, relationship between level and volume is non-linear but can be calculated Tiger indicator has the capability for this calculation and others If all that is needed is a rough indication, level may be good enough and you can save some cost by going with standard display As always, call us if you are not sure
How do we verify your application? Contact us for our application questionnaire. Fill this out and return to us. Our nearest dealer can carry out an on-site inspection, or we can directly view drawings or photographs to see possible problems, leg configuration etc. Use stress calculator to verify that stress is adequate. If everything checks out OK, we or dealer send you price quotation. If you approve everything, return signed copy plus a completed Order Definition Form (ODF), which forms part of order.

Your assurance of satisfaction Across the world, SiloWeigh has found a unique niche in the market. It has higher accuracy than any level sensor at a modest cost; lower than for load cells. This plant in Korea is a typical example. All concrete plants in Korea use some type of vessel indicator. A concrete plant manufacturer there produced these vessels, 500, 200 and 300 metric tons, which were fitted with SiloWeigh in 2004. Several hundred installations worldwide are in operation with a high degree of satisfaction. SiloWeigh really does do the job!
