Flag Raising on Mount Suribachi 23 Feb: 5th day of battle – lasted another month 5 Marines and 1 Sailor raised the flag 3 of the Marines died on the island

Statistics 30% of the Marines who landed on Iwo Jima died (6,821). 17,000 were wounded Almost all of the Japanese were killed, including their general - Kuribayashi (approx. 21,000). 1/3 of all U.S. Marines killed in WWII were killed on Iwo Jima 27 Medals of Honor winners After the battle: 2,400 disabled B-29 bombers landed on the island during WWII and it housed 30,000 American Airmen

Should we drop the bomb?

Possible pros/cons An invasion of Japan would have caused casualties on both sides. Japan was ready to call it quits anyway. Immediate use of the bomb would convince the world of its horror and prevented future use. The two cities were of limited military value and contained many civilians. The bomb's use would impress the Soviet Union and show our power. It would halt the war quickly. The Japanese had demonstrated fierce resistance. The bomb could be used partly to justify the $2 billion spent on its development.
