Why community colleges Why community colleges? USGBC recognized that community colleges were underrepresented in our membership, yet these institutions were critical to the growth of the green building movement.

Community Green provides one year of free membership in USGBC at the Organizational level, which includes the following benefits:   Unlimited employee access to online resources Member directory listing and profile listings for all employees at usgbc.org Use of the member logo and membership certificate Discount on individual unlimited access to Education@USGBC Member-only communications and resources Participation in LEED ballots and elections Eligibility to participate in committees and working groups Discounts on publications and credentialing exam registration Savings on chapter membership and Greenbuild registration Community Green provides the following benefits to support curriculum integration and sustainability initiatives at all member institutions: Free access to the following training for faculty, staff, and students: LEED project experience training for students Sustainability project management training for staff Green building curriculum integration training for faculty Free access to the following resources: USGBC’s Community College Membership Handbook LEED 101: Green Building Basics and LEED (self-paced online course) LEED 201: Core Concepts and Strategies (self-paced online course) LEED 202: How to Document and Certify Projects (self-paced online course) LEED project case studies with corresponding facilitation guide Paid from Savings Guide to Green Existing Buildings Free access to curricular resources: Sample syllabus, green building slide deck, and review questions Five in-depth LEED project case studies with facilitation guide Prep materials for the LEED Green Associate exam, including a practice exam and guidebook for planning and conducting study groups Direct support from USGBC staff and volunteers for the following activities: Creating a USGBC Students group Organizing a Green Apple Day of Service project Integrating green building and LEED into coursework Offering a LEED credentialing exam prep course Launching a LEED Lab course to provide students with project experience Involving students, faculty, and staff with the local USGBC Chapter Opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to receive Greenbuild scholarships Special program member-only rates for USGBC products Community Green provides the following benefits to support LEED credentialing of students at all member institutions located in target states, including California, Washington, Texas, Illinois, Virginia, Florida, New York, Michigan, Ohio, and North Carolina: For students enrolled in a course or faculty-led study group that prepares them to sit for the LEED Green Associate exam: Free LEED Green Associate exam registration Free access to LEED Green Associate Study Guide Free access to Green Building and LEED Core Concepts Guide For students enrolled in a course or faculty-led study group that prepares them to sit for the LEED Accredited Professional with Specialty exam: Free LEED Accredited Professional with Specialty exam registration Free access to appropriate LEED Reference Guide (BD+C, O+M, or Homes) Free access to appropriate LEED Accredited Professional Study Guide (BD+C, O+M, or Homes) Students receiving credentialing benefits through Community Green are required to either (1) join an existing USGBC Students group at their institution, (2) start a USGBC Students group at their institution with the support of a faculty or staff advisor, or (3) join the local USGBC Chapter.

With nearly 175,000 LEED credentialed professionals worldwide, USGBC prepares professionals to compete within a tough job market. Approximately 85 percent of LEED credentialed professionals believe that their credential gives them a competitive edge in the job market and that their accreditation provides their organization a competitive advantage. The increased demand for green building construction has created an increased need for a skilled and trained workforce. According to a forthcoming report on the green building industry by McGraw-Hill Construction, “training is essential for getting and maintaining green jobs; 30 percent of green job workers say they needed additional training when they started and most report that formal education and training programs will continue to be needed. Hiring firms agree; 71 percent of hiring decision makers maintain that being credentialed increases competitiveness.” Source: McGraw-Hill Construction.
