Interdisciplinary research on language & speech Cognitive Science Cognitive Neuroscience Artificial Intelligence

The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology An interdisciplinary research institute devoted to basic research in the physical sciences, computation, engineering, biology, behavior, and cognition. Beckman Institute research is focused around four research themes: Biological Intelligence Human-Computer Intelligent Interaction Integrative Imaging Molecular and Electronic Nanostructures

Biological Intelligence Cognitive Science: how higher mental processes and how humans represent knowledge and process information; language & learning Cognitive Neuroscience: how cognitive and emotional functioning are implemented in the neural architecture of the human brain NeuroTech: Neural systems and computation; Molecular and cellular neurobiology Linguists: Chilin Shih; Darren Tanner; Marina Terkourafi Many other speech and language researchers!

Human-Computer Intelligent Interaction Artificial Intelligence: robotics, vision, knowledge representation, learning, image processing, scheduling, reasoning, decision and information systems, and natural language processing Human Perception and Performance: mechanisms of human perception and the relations between perception and action Image Formation and Processing: computerized imaging; image-video transmission, storage, and manipulation; and image and scene modeling and analysis Linguists: Roxana Girju; Silvina Montrul; Ryan Shosted Many other speech and language researchers!

Illinois Language and Literacy Initiative Co-chaired by Jennifer Cole and Kara Federmeier Campus-wide collaborative initiative for studying language and literacy from biological, psychological and engineering perspectives.

How can students get involved? Talk to Beckman faculty Take classes in areas related to Beckman research Talk to graduate students currently doing research at Beckman Attend talks, brown bags, seminars Visit the Beckman Institute webpage: http://beckman.illinois.edu/
