Comparison of changes of electrocardiographic measurements and breathing frequency from wakefulness to REM (Δ=REM−wakefulness) in men and women (unpaired t test). Comparison of changes of electrocardiographic measurements and breathing frequency from wakefulness to REM (Δ=REM−wakefulness) in men and women (unpaired t test). The presence of a significant difference between REM and wakefulness within subjects is indicated by an asterisk (see also Tables 2 and 3). RR interval and RR variability (sdRR) significantly increase in men while remaining stable in women from wakefulness to REM. In both men and women, the QT interval increases. However, the QTc remains stable through sleep in men while increasing significantly during REM sleep in women. Breathing frequency decreases in men whereas it increases in women, leading a statistically significant difference between the 2 groups. Paola A. Lanfranchi et al.
